About Kenneth

My love of children led me to become an intervention math teacher in Colorado Springs after relocating to Colorado after retirement in 2009. I've taught all levels of math intervention, mentoring young 7th graders experiencing problems in math. I've also taught at all grade levels and all subjects from K-12th grade. As a teacher, I enjoy the relationship building and caring for children of all ages, helping them to achieve their goals, increase their awareness of the world around them, and support them in the activities that they enjoy most. I have the summer off beginning May 22, 2014 and am available any day of the week.

I'm a married, young 55-year-old male with 4 kids of my own in the Briargate area (ages 8, 10, 12, and 14). I teach 3rd-6th grades in a language immersion charter school in Colorado Springs. My child rearing experiences come from having 7 children of my own, 3 of which are young professionals and out of the home, and being a teacher. I am a retired Air Force officer with 29 years' flight aviation experience in multiple aircraft and have been a role model for many young adults for many, many years. I have also tutored students in mathematics and been an educational consultant.

If you prefer the experience of a school teacher, a retired military officer of over 29 years, a family man with 4 kids of my own, and someone who will truly care for the learning of your child/children, then you've found the right person.

I want to help those who need support. I am financially secure, and look to tutor students who truly need assistance and parents who want to make a difference in the lives of their children.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I recently scored 100% on the ACT Math Tutor exam.

Algebra 1

B.S. Degree in Mathematics, 29 years teaching aviation, and 6 years teaching H.S. math. Tutor for students preparing for ACT/SAT college entrance exams.

Business

As a general manager of two steak house restaurants for 2 years I was responsible for full-spectrum business operations from hiring and training of staff, food operations, cost control strategies, vendor operations, labor costs, inventory control, employee labor relations, safety, health inspections, and a myriad of other operations. I worked in the restaurant business for 9 years, including 5-star private island operations to tourist/seasonal cafeteria operations. I completed a 4-week management training course culminating in a management position for FLAGSTAR, the largest private owners of restaurants and fast food stores in the U.S. The owner of the corporation, Gerry Richardson, is now the owner of the Carolina Panthers NFL team, and continues his business acumen as a franchisee.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently teaching 3rd-6th grade English, Language Arts, Math, and Science in a Language Immersion Charter School in Colorado Springs. My 28 students represent 12 countries (mostly Spanish and Chinese) and their annual assessment scores in Reading reflect that, on average, their growth as compared to the NWEA norms exceed 150-200%. I have served as a 'Math Intervention' teacher and have taught all subjects from K-12. I have a B.S. Math degree, and over 100 credits in Master's Level classes. Even at 55, I am still taking classes at UCCS. I have worked with numerous students on IEP's (still have some in my class) and value the student-centered approach to learning.

Special Needs

As an intervention teacher, I have worked with students of several types with IEP's, LEP's, for a variety of reasons including 'Math Learning Disabilities' (MLD). I have taken Special Education classes as part of my Master's Degree in Education, and currently work with several students in my 3rd/4th grade class who have an IEP. Study Skills

'Study Skills' are best learned when the student understands the nature of what is being studied. Each discipline lends itself to a unique set of study skill patterns to reach the best performance. As a teacher, instructor, and evaluator of students in all disciplines (subjects), I don't just teach the subject, but rather, I introduce the skills necessary for the student to 'learn' the subject. Training students to learn through study skills allows the student to strengthen their own independence and understanding of the subject being taught. A four year college degree in B.S. Mathematics, and over 100 hours of graduate work has taught me to value study skills to achieve the best performance.
