About Elaine

I am a passionate, retired, veteran public school teacher and math tutor. My background is in elementary and middle school instruction with an emphasis on mathematics and science. I am currently tutoring students in grades 2-10 up to Algebra 1. I have also taught a college prep mathematics class 050 at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs.

I delight in coaching my students with logical and practical problem-solving strategies. My true joy comes in feedback about the success my students are experiencing after tutoring with me. I am an optimist who believes every student has the potential to succeed; persistence pays off in the long run for all of my students. I can differentiate my instruction to align with kinesthetic, visual, and auditory learning styles. I also have experience with students who have minor dyslexia issues. I have a 6-hour cancellation policy. I work from my home in north Security just south of the Colorado Springs city limits.

I have my students work with me at a table so we can converse and solve problems together. I prefer that my students show me their syllabi, study guides and/or textbooks so we can focus directly on the areas where the student needs support to make the greatest gains possible. I am willing to prep my students for quizzes and exams if arrangements are made with me in advance. I strongly recommend purchasing a basic calculator for middle school students and for high school students, please buy a graphing calculator for dummies book which matches your child's graphing calculator.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have worked with students in middle school on Pre-Algebra and Algebra concepts as a math interventionist.

Common Core

I am a licensed professional educator who has helped teachers and students understand the targets in Common Core Mathematics instruction. I am also working with Pearson to grade and evaluate 8th grade math questions used on common core math assessments with PARCC. I am taking a course through CU Boulder on instructing functions with common core standards for multi-lingual learners.

Dyslexia

I am qualified to teach a dyslexic student mathematics in middle school because of my extensive experience as a math interventionist in two junior highs for two years. I know how to use hands-on/minds-on instruction with lots of manipulatives and visual aids to assist students who must cope with dyslexia. I am currently tutoring an 8th grader who is homeschooled in mathematics with great success.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor elementary students in mathematics. I have a current elementary teaching licenses in the state of Colorado. I taught in an elementary school as a classroom teacher for 12 years in 1st, 2nd, and 6th grades. I taught reading, math, language arts, science and social studies during those 12 years at a local elementary school. I have tutored math students in grades 3 - 8 after school in my classroom and privately. I have tutored students after school in a reading intervention program at my elementary school. I earned a B.A. in Mathematics in 1990 and certification to teach elementary school for grades K-6 from the University of Colorado.

Elementary Math

I am a Colorado Licensed Professional Educator for Elementary grades K-6 and Math grades 7-12.

Handwriting

I have taught D'Nealean print and cursive writing to 2nd graders and 1st graders for 10 years. I have introduced each letter and used practice sheets for students to copy the letter formation correctly. I have helped many students improve their handwriting by using other media like sandpaper, hand gel, shaving cream, and paint to improve the eye-hand coordination while writing in cursive.

Logic

I have taken 2 logic courses as part of my undergraduate education. One course was a philosophy course with logic. I still own the text books. I have also been trained in symbolic logic for mathematics.

Microsoft Windows

I have been using MS Windows platforms for the past 20 years. I can help new users access the information they need with this operating system as a fellow user. I just taught my 80 year old friend how to use her Windows 10 software.

Phonics

I taught 2nd graders to use phonics for decoding new words for 9 years. I also taught 1st graders and students in grades 2nd and 3rd to use phonics decoding skills in our after school reading program. I have taken training in Phonographix and well as other courses as a professional elementary school teacher.

Prealgebra

I taught Prealgebra skills to middle school students as a math interventionist at three junior highs in Widefield School District 3 and as a classroom teacher at CMCA junior high.

Study Skills

As a professional educator, I know how to teach students to study for tests, quizzes, and other assessments. I graduated Valedictorian of my high school and use that experience when I am tutoring students in mathematics. I have also coached students after school in middle school to support them in completing school assignments.
