About Amanda

I have been tutoring for nearly 10 years, and have found it's one of the most rewarding activities in which I partake. Throughout college I was a one-on-one peer tutor, employed by my university, with a focus on literature and creative writing. However, this job also provided me with extensive training in working with non-native speakers, and in all disciplines: writing analytical and persuasive essays, public speaking, business memos, lab reports, cover letters, and personal statements, and more.

Additionally, my background as a tutor has been to engage in non-directive tutorials, focused on fostering discussions with the students in order to ensure deep and lasting learning. In other words, I don't just edit, I work to make sure the student leaves the tutorial with the proper tools to better his or her own educational experience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

During my time as an undergraduate tutor, the majority of our students were non-native English speakers. We were extensively trained in the best methods for tutoring non-native speakers, and I found that I have a passion for this area of tutoring. I am patient, caring, and understanding, as well as eager to help non-native speakers with any sort of tutoring.

Writing

All disciplines of writing are my primary focus as a tutor. When given a writing assignment or task, I can tutor for any kind of essay or paper. I am passionate on teaching individuals of all ages to write (and focus my efforts on giving students their own tools to be excellent writers), and plan on returning to graduate school to complete my doctorate in rhetoric and composition.
