University of Wisconsin, Madison (Business)
Unviersity of Minnesota, Twin Cities (MEd)
I hold a Master's degree (M.Ed.) in Education and taught in the public school system in Minnesota at the middle school and high school levels. I have also worked in private industry as both a technical writer and a Web designer, taking classes to develop my computer and design skills.
I have also worked as a curriculum writer where I developed enrichment classes for children in 3rd world countries.
I especially enjoy teaching children or adults one-on-one because lessons can be tailored to specific learning styles (auditory, visual, or sensory). This encourages students to learn more easily by adapting lessons appropriately. Secondly, my teaching strategy is to use the familiar to teach the unfamiliar, using common metaphors whenever possible. I offer a linear and sequential mode of instruction, beginning with the simple and progressing to the complex, as student need and ability indicates.
I am a writer at heart having written on-line content for Web sites as well as a 100-page print booklet about a school I hope to launch in the future. I was also a technical writer for a major corporation here in Colorado Springs.
Secondly, I completed the Competent Communicator award for Toastmasters International, having given 10 speeches each with a specific emphasis.
I have tutored a 2nd grade student previously in the "Rise and Shine" program through a local church. This program was designed to help elementary students who were struggling in their reading and vocabulary skills. My student and I enjoyed a strong rapport and she made progress toward her goals.
I have worked with computers personally and professionally for over 20 years. I have designed a multi-scale Web site for an employer and maintained a large departmental intranet site for MCI (now, Verizons Wireless). I am also skilled at Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I graduated from Toastmasters with the first level award in 12/14. Every time I spoke I won against my competitor.
Also, in high school I was in forensics and competed at the state level, where I won a 1st place medal.
