About Chloe

I have been tutoring liberal arts subjects for the last nine years. My focus recently has been on test preparation, and I work well with students of all ages. My students typically see a strong rise in their scores no matter where they are starting from, and I work closely with students and parents to create a plan of action and execute it so that students can achieve their academic goals. I have had the opportunity to work with students who have ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, and other officially undiagnosed learning disabilities, so I am experienced in tailoring material to students with these additional needs.

My degree is in Russian language and international studies; in my spare time however, my passion has always been the arts. I have a long history working with community theater and local film companies to develop youth enrichment programs, and I enjoy working with students of all ages. I am a published author, writing both fiction and non-fiction pieces, and I have worked as a speech and debate coach for top level competitors. In 2005 I earned the Congressional Award Gold Medal for my teaching and volunteering.

I have stayed active in the arts through coaching speech students, mentoring middle school students and starting a film company to develop young leaders. I have greatly enjoyed developing the curriculum for that project - covering everything from acting and film history to resume development and networking.

Above all, I am a continuing student, eager to learn with each new experience, each new opportunity, and each new person I meet. So I look forward very much to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

My experience in this area is primarily with high school students, although I have worked with advanced middle-school students some as well. My mother developed a college prep program about five years ago, and since then I have toured with her, helping teach her seminars. We focused on test taking skills, resume development, strategizing with college applications and essay writing, as well as several sessions on how to get scholarships. I taught a number of my own classes as well as helping her with her sessions.

I love working with students and helping them get ready to take on the challenge of preparing for life after high school - whether that's vocational school, traditional college, or something else like apprenticeships or entrepreneurship. My goal is to work closely with student and parent to create a comprehensive strategy to take the student anywhere they want to go.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was raised in a homeschooling family. Tutoring was a part of my life from very early on as the oldest of my siblings. I have also worked in Montessori schools, studied basic child development, nannied for over 3 years and worked as a paid tutor for numerous families with kids K-6th grade. For younger children I like setting up clear objectives, incorporating positive re-enforcement, and as much as possible making the learning the game that it should be at that age. For older and more advanced children my strategy doesn't change much, but the pace and the work I encourage them to do on their own is greater.

English

I am a published author and an amateur blogger. For the past several years I have been working with students from grade school through professional writers to coach them on writing for classes, standardized tests and competitions. I work together with students to first set reasonable goals and then provide a framework for helping them achieve those goals. Thanks for reading - Let me know if you have any questions! I look forward to working with you.

General Music

I have been a musician since I was able to speak. I learned to read music almost before I learned to read books. My primary instrument is voice, but I have background teaching Piano and music theory (privately and with a Montessori school). I can play the flute and I recently picked up the harp. I toured the rocky mountain region for three years with the CAHSA choir (1997-2000), and I studied piano from 1994-2002 During my time at the University of Denver, I pursued my musical training performing with the Women's choral and taking private voice lessons and the Lamont Conservatory.

ISEE

I love working with young students to prepare them with test taking skills that they can use not only to ace the ISEE, but as they continue taking tests throughout their academic careers. With this in mind I work on review of material as well as on test taking strategy. Test taking is about showcasing what you know. Your students deserves all the tools they need to show their skills to the full extent of their potential.

Photography

I have a background in art and photography, as well as cinematography. Architecture and portraiture are my favorite subjects but capturing life - from landscapes and lowlight, to still-lifes and action - all of it calls to me.

I love working with students to develop an eye so that they can take spectacular pictures - no matter what kind of equipment they have. My philosophy of teaching photography is based around lots of hands on experience and excursions to experiment with light, subject matter and technique. I do not have extensive equipment as I believe that a good photographer should be able to shoot with whatever camera is at hand. So if you have lots of expensive body's and lenses, great - but that's not necessary to begin learning how to be a masterful photographer. Bring whatever you've got and we'll work with it.

Photography is about storytelling. Its painting with light and shadow. Its capturing a moment just as it was - forever. Its creating images that inspire, challenge, calm and delight. Whether you want to learn for pleasure or for business- photography is one of the most rewarding skills i have learned. And I would love to pass my experience on to you.

Public Speaking

I coached and competed in speech and debate for 8 years, earning over 16 titles and competing at the national championships five times. My students have gone on to similar competitive accolades. However, much of their success is truly their own. Public speaking is all about preparation and passion. Those are skills and habits I can coach, but that students truly fly with when they invest the time and thought into their presentation. I love working with all skill levels whether its helping prepare a wedding toast, training for a high school speech meet, or helping with a business presentation.

Russian

I studied Russian in High school and then continued my language studies through college at the University of Denver and at Hertzen University in St. Petersburg in Russia. I overcame a number of mental challenges during my study (second languages are not my gift) and so I have many strategies for working with dyslexia, memory issues, understanding grammar and boredom with lessons.

I like a holistic approach to the language study - reading, speaking, listening and writing - so my lessons tend to include Movies and cartoons, short stories and news paper articles, grammar and phonetic work and small written assignments. I am far from fluent, but I know how to study and I know how to teach you how to study so that you can reach whatever language goals you have for yourself.

SAT Writing

I have been tutoring students for the SAT for the past 4 years. My students typically see a significant increase in their scores after working with me and working consistently through the homework assignments. I believe test preparation should be about helping students reach their academic goals, not about tons of homework or unnecessary pressure. I see my job as that of a partner with the student to help them do their best.
