About Tom

Tom K., video producer, specializes in documentary production in the US and abroad. He has produced documentaries in more than fifty-five countries from Baghdad to Bogotá, from Tokyo to Cairo from Paris and Lima to Kabul.

Tom has been producing documentaries for more than twenty-five years, with an emphasis on social awareness, natural history, history, and science. Since 2002, Tom has produced thirty-seven half-hour documentaries that were shot on location in Iraq, Afghanistan, Jordan, Mexico, France and the U.S. His programs have appeared on ABC, NBC, FOX, HDNet, al Jezeera International, BBC , and Algerian Television. Prior to being a documentary producer Tom lived and worked as a journalist in Iran for seven years.

His documentaries have won numerous awards on the international festival circuit. One recently won the top award, the Platinum Remi, for investigative documentaries, at an International Film Festival against 54 other entries. Two of his documentaries were selected for showings at the New York International Film Festival. His natural history documentary won the Gold Award in the TV Pilot Category at an International Film Festival against 45 entries.

Tom, received his BA degree from San Francisco State University in Creative Arts with an emphasis in Motion Picture Production and Still Photography. He did graduate work at San Francisco State taking classes in advanced Motion Picture Production and Political Geography. Tom worked as an instructor at Red Rocks Community College as a teacher of introduction to video production, editing and documentary productions. He has presented seminars on social awareness documentary and natural history documentaries.

Tom can offer guidance to the student in learning the many different concepts of video production from: research – creative – conceptualize story ideas – proposal writing – budgeting – script writing – pre-production – production (technical aspects of camera operation and shot selection, lighting equipment and set up, audio recording equipment and recording methods) – post production (editing equipment, editing style and pacing, laying in audio tracks: voice, effects and music) and distribution.

Tom will design the tutoring program around the student's interest and what he/she wishes to accomplish. There will be out of class assignments depending upon the student's interest.

Tom, offers a free consultation to potential students. He prefers to do his tutoring out of his home. He has his own edit suite and has access to his production equipment.
