My philosophy of education is to educate the whole child. When I teach foreign language, I educate the hearing, seeing, cultural, and oral senses, and have the child engage in their own learning through creative activities. I enjoy giving students opportunities to explore the world where the target language is spoken. I have done this by including films in the curriculum with discussions of similarities and differences to our culture. I also have students regularly use the internet for cultural activities such as finding recipes from the target country, popular artists, banks, department stores, and many more.
I believe the way I approach instruction gives students sufficient background information to be able to communicate effectively when they visit the target country and that the experiences they gain from learning a language are lifelong. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I'm CO certified K-12 in ESL. I have 2.5 years experience teaching it to adults, college students and high school students, along with some subbing at the elementary level. I have taught both individuals, small groups and regular size classes. I have used visuals methods, conversation starters (for active discussions), reading of literature and dramatization of such, and word walls- where students use their background knowledge to identify words. I feel comfortable teaching learners at every level, from beginners to advanced.
While I have not officially majored in music, I took 2 years of voice lessons by university professors while still in high school, and an additional 2.5 years of lessons by a professor at the Northern Norwegian Music Conservatory during my college years. I did not attend the conservatory because I was not able to combine language and music studies, as the system did not allow at the time. I, however, did learn fundamental methods in voice, along with methods of accentuation, enunciation and tone in singing classical works. I have additionally sung in choirs throughout high school at for about 10 years after.
