Colorado State University (Geology Education)
I have roughly 10 years' experience tutoring 6th through 12th grade science. I really enjoy tutoring undergrad science, especially the geo-sciences (geology, mineralogy, astronomy, meteorology, climatology, oceanography, etc.), but also introduction to chemistry, physical science and biology. I am a licensed Secondary Science Teacher in the state of Colorado. When it comes to studying for a test, you can either cram and memorize, or you can really understand. My goal as a tutor is to help you understand. If you're struggling with science, I can help you understand how it relates to every day life. I can help you find the "why behind the what". Why is Science important? It is everywhere! The fruits of Science's labor are so ever-present in our modern lives that it's easy to forget the knowledge, processes, and questions that got us here. The fun of science is asking questions, then searching for the answers. Even better is figuring out the "why" of the answers! I was looking for a tutor for my Geology class and found Monica. She is very friendly and a great tutor. She is also very knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend her to any students.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Astronomy is one of my many hobby subjects. I took a semester of it in college, and taught it to 6th graders. When I lived in the mountains, I had my telescope and Planisphere out as often as I could. The concepts you learn in Astronomy can help with understanding other subjects like math and physics. It’s also just plain fun! I can help you understand the material and have fun with it, too.
Biology, especially Evolutionary and Plant Biology, is one of my hobby subjects. I have taught both Honor’s and General Biology at the high school level. It may seem like the things you’re being taught in Biology aren't relevant to the rest of your life, but even I have been surprised by how often the understanding of Biology has been useful to me. I can help by making the concepts understandable and useful.
Chemistry is one of those subjects that seems really hard until you can see it working. Most Chemistry concepts can be demonstrated in the kitchen! I taught General Chemistry to high school juniors and seniors, and absolutely loved it. I am excited to show you some kitchen Chemistry, and help you understand the concepts.
Have you ever studied a map? I mean really studied it? I love maps. You can learn so much about the world around us. We live in a global society, and knowing about the rest of the world is an important part of living in that society. I can help make maps and geography fun, interesting, and useful.
I have taken five years of college level Geology, and would have a degree in the subject if I had not changed course to teaching. Geology (and especially Mineralogy) is my real passion. I have spent nearly every summer since 1999 studying the rocks and minerals of Colorado. I love sharing my passion with others.
My high school English teacher always told us that how we write or speak says more about us than what we write or say. Because of her influence, I continue to hold myself to the highest grammatical standards. As a science teacher, my students told me that my grammar expectations were stricter than even their English teacher’s. I would be very happy to help you learn and use your words to the highest standard possible.
Prealgebra is the math you will use for the rest of your life. Groan all you want about word problems; they reflect how math is used in the real world. Being comfortable with turning a word problem into an equation, then solving for the variable, is essential for just about everything you will ever do. I love word problems, and will be very happy to help you with them.
I hold myself to the highest standards of writing, and have been the family proofreader since high school. I enjoy helping people make sure that their writings are up to the highest possible standard, and will be happy to share my techniques and knowledge with you.
I learned, very early, that comprehending what I read is very important. My parents stressed this importance all through my childhood. On the ACT test, I scored in the 83rd percentile for reading. I still love reading for fun as well as to learn new things. I have learned, and make use of, several strategies for understanding what I read, and I would be very happy to teach them to you.
I firmly believe that how I write says more about me than what I write. I make sure to hold myself to the highest standards in my writing. I would be very happy to help you write to the highest standard possible.
