About Tyler

The best tutor isn't the one that you come back and see every week. The best tutor is the last one that you will ever need to see.

It should be my responsibility as a professional tutor to do everything in my ability to work on both short-term solutions and long-term solutions to my student's academic struggles. For students to be able fend for themselves in the academic pursuit is a gift of the highest order. However, that gift does not come over night. On the other hand, tests are already looming on the immediate horizon. It is within the interests of both the student and the parent that they are prepared for the current material as well as prepared to seize their own futures. This is my goal as a tutor. My goal is to make sure that my students no longer have a need for me.

Whether you're a student pushing from a B to an A, a student wishing you could pass with just a C, or simply finding it difficult to sit down and focus on your work, I can help you develop a permanent solution to whatever troubles you. A lack of understanding can manifest in various different ways. Some people need a new perspective on the material. Some people need a guide. Some people need to improve their study habits. Some need to improve their test taking abilities. I identify these weaknesses and offer solutions to them. My approach to tutoring is an intersection of psychology and mathematics. I am rigorous in my understanding of math, but I do not dismiss the essential role that the student's psychology plays in their academics. An open and honest discourse between a tutor and their student is key. If you can't convince a student to engage the material, there is no special technique under the sun that can help them. It is my belief that perspective plays a larger role in academics than any form of personal aptitude and I aim to demonstrate that as fact.

My personal background in academia is an odd blend of math and psychology. I have always been strongest in math from as early as I can remember. I was originally in Computer Science when I was in college, but I couldn't see myself working in that field. While I adored math, what really lit up my world was the study of the mind. I was utterly captivated by stories of great human beings who accomplished incredible feats against all odds. I wanted so badly to understand what their driving force was against what seemed like an overwhelming pressure to divert their course from the people around them. The stories came from all kinds of backgrounds: great philosophers, scientists, artists, prophets, and politicians. My goal is to understand the processes that shaped them into the formidable forces that they were. My tutoring is the beginning of that path.

I do not want to make this a business. I want to give my students the tools they need to seize any future they would like.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Discrete Math

I took Discrete Math in college, and I actually got into the tutoring business because when my professor was looking to recommend a student tutor, she dropped my name for the position. This was an unsolicited recommendation as well, so I believe this speaks to my ability in the topic. I was then one of the few tutors at my college's Math Excel Center who was capable of teaching the subject, so I was able to get plenty of experience in tutoring the subject as well.
