About Tyler

The most important aspect of tutoring is communication. Without a proper understanding between tutor and student, regardless of the tutor's personal skill, nothing would be accomplished.

I enjoyed mathematics and I had often considered going into math education, but I departed from that path to focus my efforts into other areas. However, that desire to aid people in mathematics never died. In college, I spent two years working at the local math center where I was provided the opportunity to serve students that walked into the center at their own leisure. I was pretty much an on demand tutor for various subjects. It was here that I was taught by one of my professors how to effectively acquire information from students and convey solutions in terms that they could understand.

The greatest pleasure for me is when an understanding dawns upon my students. It's as if a light just shines down on them as the pieces fall into place in their heads. To know that I've been able to guide somebody through the mire of misunderstandings is incredibly rewarding. There's nothing that compares to that satisfaction.

I quickly found that the most difficult part of the job was communicating information. While I was not able to tutor for the higher tier mathematics as could my peers majoring in mathematics and physics, I was still able to find my own niche in teaching. I have a significant background in mathematics, but I actually possess a bachelor's in Psychology. The niche I carved out was my ability to examine a student's thought process and uproot any misunderstandings. Where I lacked breadth of knowledge, I made up for in depth and effective communication. I was most effective in aiding students who were just developing the critical thinking skills needed for mathematics and for teaching forms of math that departed from conventional thinking such as Discrete and Statistics.

If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me. I would be more than happy to talk about my background and approach to tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Discrete Math

I took Discrete Math in college, and I actually got into the tutoring business because when my professor was looking to recommend a student tutor, she dropped my name for the position. This was an unsolicited recommendation as well, so I believe this speaks to my ability in the topic. I was then one of the few tutors at my college's Math Excel Center who was capable of teaching the subject, so I was able to get plenty of experience in tutoring the subject as well.
