I am a retired finance professional with extensive investment industry and teaching experience. I can help students excel in virtually any finance course up to MBA first-year courses. I prefer to focus on fundamental underlying concepts and helping the student understand how those concepts apply to and shape the particular problem at hand. Working problems with theory interjected real-time seems to work very well. "Getting through the exam" is necessary for everyone, but not very valuable in the long run. What will sustain the student through school and beyond in a finance career is a solid grounding in underlying financial concepts that they can apply to any financial issue or problem.
While I have a background in sophisticated finance, I enjoy helping students just starting out in finance. I can also help with accounting concepts, but I have not kept up with all of the developments in the industry that would be necessary for college senior-level courses. I am not familiar with tax and estate-planning tools utilized by financial planners.
I am happy to work with your materials and help with your assigned problems. I can travel, but prefer to work in my home office where we have access to numerous finance texts and other resources. I do charge travel time at 40% of my regular hourly rate. My schedule is relatively flexible.
I have used Excel in finance for several decades. My spreadsheet history goes from paper spreadsheets at a Big Eight accounting firm to VisiCalc to Lotus 1-2-3 and finally to Excel. I don't use every function in Excel, but can help you get off to a very good start and cover the features most used in financial and statistical analysis. You will find that, in the work environment, almost everything is done in Excel rather than with a calculator. Furthermore, it is much easier to understand underlying calculations in Excel rather the "black box" of a financial calculator. Personally, I have never been able to peer inside a calculator to see what is happening.
My education includes an undergraduate accounting degree through the Honors Division at Indiana University - Bloomington. Of approximately 1200 classmates, 12 were admitted to the Honors Division. I also received my MBA in Finance from Indiana University. My learning continued well after school, including the opportunity to work directly with some of the fathers of modern financial theory.
I passed the CPA exam in one sitting, but have focused on finance for the past 3+ decades.
My professional experience includes:
- One year of auditing at a Big Eight accounting firm.
- Corporate finance and product analysis and development at Hallmark Cards.
- Business and Finance consulting at Touche Ross & Co (now Deloitte Consulting).
- Managed the acquisition of and served as Chairman of a small bank.
- 18 years helping to grow a new money management firm from 3 people to 125 people and over $20 Billion under management. We focused on bond portfolio management for large pension funds and institutions.
My teaching experience includes:
- teaching introductory and cost accounting courses at Indiana University and Rockhurst College.
- 12 years of teaching finance courses at Leeds School of Business - University of Colorado at Boulder including Corporate Finance, Financial Markets & Institutions, Investments & Portfolio Management, Financial Institutions Management and the senior honors Seminar in Investment Management.
- while at Leeds, I designed, founded and administered for 11 years the Quantitative Finance Certificate Program. The program has experienced a 100% placement rate including numerous high level investment management and Wall Street positions.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed - not just in school, but beyond in your career. Jerry was a great tutor that really helped me better understand different accounting subjects I had previously learned! We covered cash flow and the different stages of a statement. He really helped me apply each concept to real life companies/situations!
My lesson with Jerry was great. He will take his time to make sure you really understand what your studying. If you think you might need help with one of your assignments, I would reccomend trying a lesson with Jerry, it will help.
Jerry was able to help me better understand what I am learning in class. He was able to show me the bigger picture rather than just plug in numbers into an equation and get an answer that doesn't mean anything to me. He was on time and seems to have a flexible schedule.
Jerry was very patient and knowledgeable...he guided me through ratios and showed me procedures in Excel that I will need in the future.
Jerry did an amazing job helping me in finance. I am a college student, two months away from graduation. He was able to wrap my finance courses up into a single 1.5 hour session. He is kind and understanding of anyone's knowledge of the material you are working on. He makes it a point to explain everything so you get the big picture!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
