I am a newly retired teacher who has spent my career teaching reading and writing. I am trained in several different methods of teaching reading and assessing reading skills. I also have experience with special education students, as my master's degree is in mild to moderate special education with and emphasis on literacy.
My experience includes being a classroom teacher in grades K-2, reading teacher for grade levels K-5, intervention teacher for grades K-5 and an instructional coach for teachers teaching K-5. My philosophy for teaching reading and writing is to assess the students' abilities and then take them from where they are to where they need to be, using a multiple modality approach. Early reading intervention is my primary interest. Reading and Writing go hand in hand, and good instruction in one will improve the skills in both. I have tutored many students in the past with great success. I am a newly retired teacher who has spent my career teaching reading and writing. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My 26 years of teaching experience has all been in K-6th grade. My focus, however, has been to teach reading in the primary grades. I have been a special education resource teacher as well as a kindergarten, first and second grade teacher. I was an interventionist and instructional coach in both reading and math.
I have a Bachelor's degree in elementary education and a Master's degree in Special education. I am certified to teach the FAST phonics program as well as Lindamoodbell.
I have taught all grades at the primary level as well as being a special ed. resource teacher. I finished my career as an instructional coach and interventionist.
