About Katie

Congratulations on your commitment to learning! Knowledge is power!

My approach to working one on one with a student is fairly literal and my style is to demand that a student focuses on the task of learning at hand. I have a broad educational background in math, writing, science and music. I can be very creative if encouraging a student to become a better speaker or writer, or very linear in my teaching style for subjects such as math, whichever helps best in the situation. I have taken on students prior to working with WyzAnt to tutor high school math and violin.

Other teaching I have done includes presentations for all levels about the work of scientists in the harsh climates of Mt Washington, the Greenland Icecap and South Pole, Antarctica. Very little about these places is intuitive and the geography itself is perhaps the most surprising. But I have really enjoyed sharing about the field work there and the science. I have been a leader while on expedition to these remote environments and public speaking was a must. It was something I have often been asked if I could teach to others.

I scored well on tests though high school and graduated from Oberlin College with a double major in Biology and Environmental Studies and a minor in Geology. I also studied Viola and Music Theory while I was there and I participated as a leading member of the student housing and dining student co-operatives.

I scored the highest possible score on the writing section of my GREs and people continue to tell me I should just be a writer or teach. I would like to give something to the students in my own community. I graduated from Concord-Carlisle High School in 1996. Concord has exceptionally strong schools and the students who attend are from very strong and intelligent families. During my time working overseas in the last decade, I have come to appreciate this very, very much. Growing up here baby-sitting a few younger siblings and in most of the neighborhoods in Concord, I have had plenty of opportunities to tutor subjects taught in the public schools.

I would be honored to be considered for tutoring jobs in the area around Concord, MA or Summit County, CO.

Thanks for considering me!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have previously tutored high school math geometry and Algebra I and college Algebra II. I would be pleased to take on another student in math and any of several other academic subjects.

Microsoft Word

I have been working with MS Office products for 20 years and know both how common place they are now in the work place, but also how useful they can be.

I think that having assignments and learning as you go is the best way to go. Learning from others whom I worked with was always the best way for me to learn.

I enjoy teaching and helping others to improve skills for work and life. Please consider my application. Thank you!

Proofreading

I received a perfect score (6.0) on the GRE Writing exam, and received an A+ in the Oberlin College course "Writing for the Biological Sciences" addressing the needs of science papers to be written with economy and with clear language.

As a Site Manager, I have edited several resumes for employees who were successfully promoted or hired elsewhere after a successful contract working with me; and I have edited countless reports for corporate review.

SAT Writing

The Writing portion of the SAT tests the students ability to use sound English to argue a point of view using rhetoric and reasoning and by showing examples that back up that point of view.

I believe that this writing can be easier than many students realize, however it still requires practice, an honest review of a student's writing and encouragement to keep striving to improve that writing.

I enjoy writing for myself, but I especially enjoy helping others to succeed!

Speech

I have been a leader in many of the communities I have lived and participated in. I have facilitated large housing and dining co-operative meetings run by consensus when I worked with student co-operatives. And I was also a Site Manager for a corporate-run remote science field station for two years. During that time, I led many discussions and spoke to large audiences. I kept my communities informed and solicited their input and ideas.

Since that time, I have spoken to several classrooms regarding my experiences living and running a remote science station. One thing that I think is important when speaking to others is to believe in what you have to say and understand it well.

Violin

I was the Fiddle Player for bluegrass performance at Open Mic, South Pole, 2012. I taught violin and also performed duets at Station Open Ceremony, South Pole, 2003. I was an Oberlin Community Orchestra Violist in Oberlin, OH 1999. I was a member of the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra in Boston, MA 1994 – 1996. I toured Italy with the Senior GBYSO Orchestra 1996, where we were the first youth orchestra to play at the Ravenna Festival. I was the Principle Violist of the Repertory Orchestra in 1995 and toured Twin Cities, MN 1995. I was a guest Oboist and English Horn Player during tour in 1995. I was an All-State and District Orchestras Violist; MA 1993 – 1996. I performed with the Spencer Brook Youth Valley Orchestra as a Violist in Concord, MA, 1992 – 1996.

Vocabulary

Perfect score (6.0) on GRE Writing exam.

A+ in Oberlin College course "Writing for the Biological Sciences" addressing the needs of science papers to be written with economy and with clear language.

Studied Latin for 4 years which developed my understanding of etymology.

Writing

I enjoy writing for myself and working with other people to improve their writing skills. I would be happy to help you with rhetoric, grammar, the outline or flow of your writing as well as the voice you use throughout the piece. I am happy to work with people for whom English not their first language and on writing of any style including research papers.

While I enjoy working with people on all styles of writing, I also have a background in writing for the sciences and would be happy to work with students on anything from fiction to polishing dissertations. Writing can be a broad subject!
