Hello!

I am currently a graduate student of applied mathematics at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. I earned a bachelor of science degree in applied mathematics, with a concentration in physics, and a computer science minor, from the University of Colorado in Boulder. I initially began tutoring as a work-study position, providing drop-in tutoring in a math lab. I also worked in a special education classroom and led study groups that followed a course in its entirety. I enjoyed the work so much that I have continued tutoring independently with students in upper-level math and physics subjects. I can assist with courses one typically sees while earning a degree in engineering or applied science in a wide range of math and physics courses.

I am committed to helping you put theory into practice. I always try to strike a balance between formalism and intuition. Somedays we may want to talk about the details of a theorem or proof argument, while other times we may want to step back and talk about the big picture. I love the challenge of bringing abstract concepts down to earth, and continually adapting my approach to each student's unique learning style. If I can help fellow students succeed in their studies, that is a great reward for me! I employ popular resources like Mathematica and Matlab in sessions when a clear visual or script is needed. These have been invaluable tools that I use regularly and I hope to help you integrate them into your studies too.

I am in this to grow as a STEM educator. Working with students is mutually beneficial, as I learn new things in every session too. I am dedicated to lifelong learning and passing along the things I've discovered to others. I am always interested to talk about academic goals and strategies for success, so please don't hesitate to reach out anytime :)

Mathematica

I use Mathematica as my main computational tool on a near daily basis. I first got started using this incredible software in my general physics sequence in my first year of college. My professor often used it in class, and I instantly recognized how invaluable a tool it would be for learning. I have since used it on some awesome projects involving a gravitational model of our solar system, equilibrium states of the three body problem, solving a system of ODE's describing the double pendulum, generating fractal images like the Apollonian gasket, and solving a PDE model of Chladni plates. I can get you started with discovering a world of possibilities you can do with this software, and how to incorporate it into your studies!

Discrete Math

Much of the content I first learned in a course on discrete math taken at the University of Colorado in Boulder also turned up in other coursework. For example it appeared in a computer science course on algorithms and other applied math courses on numerical methods and probability. I have also self studied out of an excellent book called 'Concrete Mathematics' because in any subject there is always more to learn :)

Probability,

Probability

I’ve tutored many students in applied math subjects including probability theory. I’ve taken this course myself, earned an A in the class, and have also seen most of this material a second time in physics courses such as quantum mechanics and thermodynamics. I’ve got really good notes and resources for probability I’ve typed up myself and I also just love math and enjoy talking about it :)

Best Tutor I’ve Ever Had

I was severely behind in my linear algebra class due to getting Covid and then breaking a finger. Evan was able to catch me up on about 3 months worth of lecture and helped me get an A when I had missed two midterms. I highly recommend picking Evan as your next tutor.

Knows Linear Algebra by Heart

Evan has encyclopedic knowledge of the subject. He will never stammer or have to look something up, he simply knows the material. One gets the impression that he has read multiple textbooks on the subject. Additionally, his explanations are far clearer than either my textbook's or my lecturer's. I highly recommend him if you need help.

Knowledgeable and friendly!

Evan and I went over an assignment involving Discrete Mathematics. He was very knowledgeable about the topic and was able to help me understand the assignment thoroughly. Evan brought up multiple examples to make things easier to comprehend and was friendly and conversational. I will definitely come to Evan the next time I need help!

Extremely helpful!

So i'm having a lot of trouble in my upper level university physics classes and that's when I came across Evan. He is very helpful and and is able to explain to me and help me understand the concepts, which my professor is not capable of teaching well.

Super Thorough and Helpful Tutor

Evan helped me through my fast paced Linear Algebra class by making sure I understood concepts. He would go through reasoning instead of not just a process to get to an answer. I performed much better on quizzes after he began tutoring me and the material felt more manageable when it was explained in a concise way.

Great tutoring session!

Evan is working on Integrated Math 3 with my son. He is able to explain the concepts in clear and understandable ways that my son is able to grasp. He is patient and personable, which is so very important. Thanks Evan!
