About Noah

I meet students at the point of their interests or frustrations and teach them the material they need in a way they will understand. Students value my my patience and clarity, my knowledge of the material I teach, and my passion for teaching and learning. I show students the connections between the material they are focusing on and the bigger picture of how it will be used in further studies and in practical applications.

I graduated with honors with a degree in music in 2011. Since then, I have taught trumpet, piano, music theory, and songwriting in private lessons and small groups; presented workshops on jazz and Jewish music to large, general audiences (Boulder Valley Schools, Congregation Nevei Kodesh); and taught English, math, and music classes at middle and high school levels as a guest teacher in Denver's North suburbs (School District 27J, The Academy, Pinnacle Charter School). In addition, I recently started tutoring Hebrew for Bar and Bat Mitzvah students.

My teaching of music is strengthened by my experience performing and recording professionally (with jazz pianist Art Lande, West African drum set player Paa Kow, and others). My teaching of English and Math are reinforced by my strong academic background in university and as an AP scholar. I am able to effectively communicate and pass on the study habits and test-taking skills that made me successful in these settings, and I work with students to find and implement strategies that work for them.

I teach in the Denver/Boulder area and online, and can travel to students for in-person lessons. I look forward to hearing from you and discussing how I can help you achieve your highest level of success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music Theory

I scored high marks in Music Theory at university and AP levels. More importantly, I apply my understanding of Music Theory every day as a professional musician, when learning, analyzing, arranging, and composing music. I make concepts understandable by connecting them to concrete musical examples, especially ones familiar to the student whenever possible.

Songwriting

When teaching songwriting, I encourage students to find their unique artistic voices and create a perfect blend of lyric and music. I think it's important for aspiring songwriters to study the songs, composers, and lyricists they like. My favorites are diverse - George Gershwin, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Leonard Cohen, Lyle Lovett, and Andrew Bird are a few songwriters who inspire me.

I have seen that growing more familiar with the building blocks of music expands artistic possibilities dramatically. I can give you a foundation in music theory and teach you to analyze music as part of their learning process. I can help you play with words, imagery, and poetry. I can help you look at the melodic and formal possibilities when working with lyrics, for the relationship between words and music makes is what really makes a song work.

I want to give my students tools they can use to make their songs unique, personal, beautiful reflections of themselves and the way they see the world.

Trumpet

I received my undergraduate degree in trumpet performance. I have taught private lessons to trumpet students for the past four years. I place an emphasis on solid fundamentals, and use methods especially from Reinhardt and Arban. Classical trumpet was the emphasis of my studies through university. I currently tour and record professionally as a sideman for several artists based in Denver, CO, playing jazz, world music, rock, and blues.

Writing

I can help you write with focus, organize your writing for clear communication, and make your writing beautiful with proper conventions and creative interest. I can share strategies for writing naturally, in a voice appropriate for your audience. I have had success writing in academic and professional settings and would like to work with you to improve your writing!
