About Chloe

Hi,
My name is Chloe and I'm currently a student at the University of Colorado - Boulder, but I'm home for the summer in Redmond, WA. I grew up in an entirely English-speaking family, but I chose to learn Spanish starting in Jr. High. Now, I've been studying Spanish for about 6 years and I'm going to minor in it. I'm pretty conversationally fluent now. I LOVE practicing my Spanish, so whether you're a Spanish-speaker looking to learn English, or an English-speaker looking to learn Spanish, I'd love to help.

I have prior experience tutoring ages 8-14, but I've worked with kids of all ages and I'm open to anyone who wants to learn. I've also ski-instructed at Stevens Pass; any opportunity to help people learn new concepts is very rewarding for me. Feel free to contact me! I look forward to working with you.

At CU Boulder, I worked as a volunteer teacher in our dining hall for an ESL worker. Every Wednesday and Friday, I would meet with a man named Javier who was from Mexico and we worked on his English. I worked through a group called The Student Worker Alliance Program (SWAP), and it was very rewarding. The SWAP mission statement is:

"Our mission is to bring together systematically divided campus sectors to share a common learning and cultural experience. This is accomplished by providing free and convenient English language classes to predominantly immigrant CU employees who hold under appreciated yet indispensable positions throughout the campus."

I found this to be very true. A great majority of workers at CU are immigrants who often receive lesser jobs and benefits than the other faculty. Being able to talk with the workers directly was an eye-opening experience. Everyone I spoke to was extraordinarily kind and grateful for their new life in America - even if it was hard work. I was teaching English, but Javier taught me about the hard realities of being an immigrant in America; he taught me to be thankful for my life, and to always give 110%.

Coming from an English background, I will be able to relate to English-speakers who want to learn Spanish as a second or third language. I will make lessons fun and very worthwhile! I've found that positive encouragement works much better than criticisms, so don't worry about feeling embarrassed. The only way to learn is to practice.

I am studying International Affairs at CU Boulder and I love political science.

I'd love to hear from you! My schedule is fairly flexible. I'm available to meet in person around the Redmond/Bellevue/Kirkland/Woodinville/Seattle area, or through video chat.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
