Teaching has always been my passion, my focus, my life's calling. I've had the honor of teaching a wide variety of students, abilities, needs and personalities, from Boston, New York City, Alexandria, VA., Wilton, CT., and Niwot, CO. I have taught off and on (mostly on!!) for eighteen years, and I hold a Professional Educator's Certificate in both CT. and CO.
My teaching style is marked by a sincere joy of learning, and a deep respect for each individual student's needs. Meeting each student where he / she is, building a relationship of mutual trust and respect, and scaffolding instruction to ensure both confidence and capability is the hallmark of my instructional style. I've taught every type of student imaginable, and have taught courses ranging from honors to special ed. inclusion classes. Every student deserves the opportunity to learn, and I am enthralled by the discourse between teacher and student that creates the climate in which the teachable moment occurs.
As a teacher, I strive to tailor the material in such a way wherein the student can unlock it, experience it, and own it as he/she never has before. That moment when a student so connects to and grasps ownership of a concept, a work, a skill set is by far my most gratifying moment as a teacher, and my whole being works to make that moment possible for each student I encounter.
As a parent, I've taken the opportunity to step away from the classroom to be more available to my own children, but am anxious to continue to instruct in a more individualized and flexible setting such as tutoring. I look forward to sharing my expertise and enthusiasm with you.
As an English teacher with eighteen years experience of high school, middle school and (community) college instructional experience, my skill set demonstrates both breadth and depth in the following capacities: literature, poetry, writing, reading, critical thinking, analysis, study skills, content modification for either special ed. or gifted learners, SAT prep (analysis and writing), IB and AP tutoring, home bound tutoring, etc.
Please don't hesitate to contact me should you require further information regarding my experience. Many thanks for your thoughtful consideration, and best of luck in your educational pursuits. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
