During my 14 years tutoring I have helped basic computer students, computer programming students, writing students and math students solve problems that mattered to them. My first geometry student went from a 'D' to a 'B' in one lesson, because I didn't tell him what to do; I asked him the questions that made him understand what he knew and what he didn't know. I have many programming mentees who are now themselves programmers at top firms.

In my computer programming teaching, I have taken a slightly different approach. Students need to work with living code that is meaningful to them. They build things that they already want to make and learn to code much faster this way. I take this same approach with writing students. They bring in their writing sample and rather than tell them what to write instead, I ask them question that make them think of better things to put down.

I think at the core though, I start with the student and her needs and then design my teaching approach for the student's needs. Everyone is different and has distinct strengths and weaknesses in relation to what they are trying to do. Some people come to and just don't understand what there homework is about. My job is to find what is shackling the power that is lying dormant within them and help them set themselves free.

Learn the language of the browser and now one of the most popular languages to serve with to make whatever you dream about. I teach Javascript to help people make whatever they are passionate about. I teach design, but I also teach programming. Node.js, React, Redux, Express, Backbone, Underscore, jQuery, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Authentication, class free object oriented programming (for simplicity and capability security), functional programming, extreme programming, TDD, literate code are among the many technologies we can use to make your applications. I have been coding since I was twelve and have been coding professionally for the past five years.

I'm also glad to teach computer science students LISPs, Java or C++. Whether it's algorithms, UML, Turing Machine programs, higher order functions or how a for loop works I can help explain these things in terms you can understand. I determine what you know and don't know so that we can target your learning in the most effective ways possible. I bring these concepts to your experience both using real world examples and the interpretation of the language you are writing in to make it "real" for you.

If you have any questions at all feel free to contact me. I'm here to help.

Video Production

I have been editing video, shooting video and directing productions for over 5 years. I previously was Media Director of Compagnia De' Colombari where I videoed stars of Broadway with multiple cameras and photographers and edited the video for release on the web. My video of Harvard Professor and presidential candidate Lawrence Lessig has been partially shown on CNN.

C++

I tutor C++ online. I've been writing C++ since I was 14 years old. I know the standard library quite well. I can teach students everything from variables, control flow, io and strings to Classes, linked lists and Polymorphism. This is most than what most students need to know.
JavaScript,

JavaScript

Javascript is my main language. I am currently co-leading a national full-time full stack development bootcamp. I have tutored many, many different JS students online and privately.

Coding

Ben went over relevant material and explained how I could understand my coding issues while providing solutions. I appreciated how friendly he was and how positive he was.

Juliett, 1 lesson with Ben

Fantastic!

Ben taught me so so much about pointers and general coding logic. After every lesson I feel more independently capable. He’s so patient and knowledgeable. Really stellar.

Grace, 5 lessons with Ben

He's great.

He's great at walking you through the code and explaining it. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to learn java script

Brian, 3 lessons with Ben

Knowledgable and patient

Ben was terrific. It was super helpful to talk through javascript concepts and architecture with him and I'm very much looking forward to more lessons. My first experience was great. As a person who comes from a pedagogy background, I can say he listened well, tailored his approach, and challenged me with questions. Too many persons in the past have simply given the answers or expected that debugging or regurgitated code would help me learn javascript "under the hood" but Ben was willing to walk me through it without giving the answers directly--a huge boon! In one session, I found at least three specific moments when concepts clicked--more than I've had in two semesters of graduate level online coding courses. I feel renewed in my passion and dedication to learning Javascript thanks to Ben.
