About Robin

I have lived in the Boulder area since 1979. Beginning in 1986, I attended the College of Music at the University of Colorado as an undergraduate within their composition department. The following academic year I was hired, while in school, as a work-study student in the offices of the Academic Excellence Program, supporting the program director. As a part of my work, I first collaborated with with the director on writing grant proposals, formal letters, and memos. Soon, based on my performance, I was assigned to complete many of the documents by myself, from general instructions and skeletal outlines. But there was another aspect to this position.

Much of the time in my capacity there I worked with students with various disabilities, and students with academic disadvantages. Although not intellectually impaired, they often needed help with proofreading and polishing their papers, and we would work together on the necessary edits. They typically needed help with grammar, usage, clarity, and structure, to various extents. Some needed instruction in basic writing and organization. We learned from each other, and it was always a thrill to be a part of their success.

I was also a teacher aide in the early 1980s, at the elementary level, which I found very rewarding. This was at the old Ruth Wood School, which was at Broadway and Iris in Boulder, and the children had special needs. I have been told that I work well, and age-appropriately, with children. I cherish and will always remember my time with them.

During the 1990s, I was privileged to learn some conversational Russian while tutoring an elderly couple in ESL for several years. They had immigrated as refugees from Tajikistan. We became close friends. As a result of my volunteer tutoring, they both successfully passed citizenship tests, and became new Americans. They also were able to communicate in English with their neighbors, benefiting socially. We enjoyed our time together. They have now both passed on, and I will never forget them.

Currently, I am working with a writer on his book, which should be out in electronic form sometime this fall. A physical edition is to follow.

High ability and skills for the English language, an affinity for language in general, and good interpersonal skills have always been strengths for me. Even as a child I would "tutor" other children. Fortunately, they didn't mind much! My approach to tutoring is respectful, positive, and flexible, bringing the individual forward from their current level, whatever that may be.

Throughout my life, I have had many opportunities to tutor both formally and informally, and to work with people on their writing. It is gratifying to be able to change lives in this way. Tutoring makes me happy and helps others!

Please contact me with any questions, and let me know how I can help!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
