About Chris

I moved to Colorado from Michigan in 2010. I have since completed graduate school, and I now teach at the University of Colorado. I am the highest rated professor at The University of Colorado on RateMyProfessor.

I have my BA from Michigan (2010) and my MA from Colorado (2014). As for standardized tests, I received a 34 on the ACT and a 1400 on the GRE.

I've taught at CU for about 6 years now. I've taught upper and lower level composition, Latin, Latin literature, and history. I also teach ACT, SAT, and GRE courses. I was part of the Graduate Teaching Program at CU, and received a number of teaching awards. I have consistently excelled in both formal and informal teaching evaluations. I work heavily with freshmen, so I am intimately aware of the college application process and I enjoy helping students make the transition from high school to college.

I've been tutoring since I was an undergraduate student at University of Michigan. In the Boulder area I've tutored: Latin, Greek, Writing, ACT, SAT, GRE, general academic support, various eras of history, and college prep. I've also tutored for the CU athletics dept. I also focus on working with students who have ADHD (as I also have ADHD).

I hold myself to a high standard when it comes to education. I think it's important to make my expectations clear to the student and to also keep the parents in the loop (if we're talking about HS students). I assign homework between lessons and begin every lesson with an in-depth review of the assignment. I try to tailor my style of teaching to each individual student. Some students need structure, others need motivation, and others just need someone to believe they can do it. I do my best to help every student.

I'm very flexible with my scheduling. I have a 3-hour cancellation policy, but if a student no-call no-shows, I will expect payment.

I am open to meeting anywhere, but I personally prefer the white-noise of a coffee shop.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you (or yours) succeed academically!

Cheers
Chris O

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I have an MA in classics. I was pursuing my PhD but once I got near the ABD line I decided to step back, focus on teaching, and repay some loans. I've taught Latin for 4 years, as well as a number of intro to classics courses at CU.

College Counseling

I work at a big state college and have seen, first-hand, exactly what colleges look for. I've been helping HS students do college apps (and especially the common app) for about 3 years. Also, my training in writing is a huge strength in helping them with writing samples. I've yet to have a student under my tutelage not get accepted to most of the schools on their A list.

GRE

I have taken the GRE and done quite well (~1400). I have also been trained in GRE prep by a local company.

Greek

I have an MA in classics. I was pursuing my PhD but once I got near the ABD line I decided to step back, focus on teaching, and repay some loans. I've taught Latin for 4 years, as well as a number of intro to classics courses at CU. I have a near PhD proficiency in Greek and have tutored it privately.

SAT Math

I am trained in tutoring and teaching the entire SAT.

SAT Writing

I've been trained in tutoring the entire SAT. I teach writing at the University of Colorado.

Social Studies

My BA is in history, classics, and comparative literature. I also have taken courses in anthropology, psychology, and philosophy. While I wouldn't feel confident tutoring college level courses in these subjects, HS level courses would be no concern.
