I regularly help students to prepare for the SAT and ACT, through vocabulary practice, test-taking strategies, reading comprehension strategies and essay-writing practice. ACT Reading

To help students prepare for the ACT reading exam, I used several key strategies. First, we worked regularly in a daily study class with in-context vocabulary across the STEM curriculum. This helped students to prepare across content areas for the non-fiction and fiction portions of the reading assessment. We also regularly practiced reading for main ideas and for details, writing concise summaries of news articles, fiction passages, and responses to factual questions from classwork in core subjects. We also regularly read, discussed, and analyzed fiction passages and poetry, applying the understanding of the elements of literature in critical analysis essays. Students learned to explore and understand complex reading passages (both non-fiction and fiction) by using the RACE format: Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite textual evidence, and give Examples from the text. Not only did students’ ACT reading scores improve significantly (Eagle Ridge Academy consistently scored the highest tests in the Brighton 27J school district) but with fewer than a handful of exceptions over five years, every student in the study class passed the college level DBQ (Document Based Writing Assessment).

ADHD

My qualifications include a State of Colorado Special Education Generalist Certification, a Professional License with a Secondary Language Arts Endorsement, and 27 years teaching experience with "twice exceptional" students. My students have combined learning disabilities and special gifts and talents; I strive to identify and honor both with each student. I work daily with small groups of students in a resource setting, working with individual learning contracts that focus on learning styles, strengths and challenges.

Dyslexia

I hold a Special Education Generalist Certification in the state of Colorado; I have worked daily with students who have a variety of learning challenges, including dyslexia, dysgraphia and a variety of processing difficulties. I did multi-sensory reading training and have worked with a variety of strategies to help students to love reading and to nurture and develop their reading skills.

Special Needs

It is my great joy to work with Gifted & Talented students who also experience learning differences to support their unique learning styles for mastery and success. I have 27 years’ teaching experience with students with ADHD, ADD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Executive Function challenges. I love to help students enjoy reading, writing and math. I am Certified/Licensed in English and Special Education; am Highly Qualified in Social Studies; and served for five years as the case manager and special education teacher for a rigorous, fast-paced, college prep STEM high school. I tutored students in many core and elective classes for grades 9-12 and facilitated hundreds of IEP meetings, most recently during the Remote Assured Learning Period of COVID 19.

My qualifications for teaching cooking include owning my own gourmet catering business for 10 years, as well as working for one of the most prestigious caterers in Los Angeles. I also worked in the restaurant business and was trained in proper health requirements for food services. I have planned, prepared and served a variety of food for several hundred people at weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, dinner parties, holiday celebrations, etc.
