I regularly help students to prepare for the SAT and ACT, through vocabulary practice, test-taking strategies, reading comprehension strategies and essay-writing practice. I have taught the following writing courses for 22 years with students ranging in ages from 14-21: *Freshman Language Arts *American Literature & Composition *World Literature & Composition *AP Literature & Composition *Communications in Society *Journalism *Yearbook and Literary Magazine *Multicultural Literature *Science Fiction & Fantasy *I helped to write the Common Core Standards L.A. curriculum for Boulder Valley School District. *I wrote original curriculum for classes taught at Colorado's Finest Alternative School, Chinook Alternatives Program, and Catalyst High School. *I blogged for Boulder Channel One on 2015 Conference on World Affairs.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

To help students prepare for the ACT reading exam, I used several key strategies. First, we worked regularly in a daily study class with in-context vocabulary across the STEM curriculum. This helped students to prepare across content areas for the non-fiction and fiction portions of the reading assessment. We also regularly practiced reading for main ideas and for details, writing concise summaries of news articles, fiction passages, and responses to factual questions from classwork in core subjects. We also regularly read, discussed, and analyzed fiction passages and poetry, applying the understanding of the elements of literature in critical analysis essays. Students learned to explore and understand complex reading passages (both non-fiction and fiction) by using the RACE format: Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite textual evidence, and give Examples from the text. Not only did students’ ACT reading scores improve significantly (Eagle Ridge Academy consistently scored the highest tests in the Brighton 27J school district) but with fewer than a handful of exceptions over five years, every student in the study class passed the college level DBQ (Document Based Writing Assessment).

Hi, my name is Leanne, and I am excited to help students prepare for the Accuplacer, the SAT and the ACT, as preparation builds confidence and skills mastery. I've worked with many students who were nervous about getting into Front Range or other community colleges (as well as schools such as Carnegie-Mellon, Harvard, Case-Western, Colorado School of Mines, etc.), but with practice and focus, they were pleased with their skills development and their test scores. I can absolutely work with you to help you be well-prepared for your school reading and writing assignments, tests and college entrance exams. (Richard Weeks, Assistant Principal, Catalyst High School) “With more than 20 years teaching experience and background in mental health, Leanne has a remarkable ability to build trusting and positive relationships with at-risk youth, gifted students, and colleagues. Working in a unique environment to create individualized educational contracts, Leanne strives to make learning enjoyable and challenging for each student. Whether struggling with ADHD or environmental sensitivities, whether questioning a sense of identity, or whether a student has simply felt invisible or not engaged in previous settings, Leanne is able to find “doorways” to foster meaningful learning and skill-building.” (Assistant Principal, Catalyst High School) “Leanne works with each student on an individual level to create learning goals. More often than not, students come to Leanne with no idea of what they would like to learn and no ambition to create a body of evidence for their learning. Yet, in each and every case, students leave her class with a sense of accomplishment, an increased belief in their ability to learn, and a greater understanding of themselves and how they can positively impact the community around them. I have observed Leanne successfully mentor students from all walks of life. She treats each student with the utmost respect and in turn they reward her by working hard and taking academic risks that allow them make hug
