About Sarah

Hi!

I'm a recent Yale graduate who just moved full-time to Colorado after spending the last four summers here. I've been tutoring since my freshman year of high school and have extensive experience with students of all ages, from 3 year olds to college students, across a huge range of subjects. I have a passion for teaching (my other part time job up here is teaching ski school) and love finding ways to make learning engaging and help kids develop a love of learning. My tutoring philosophy is that each student has a unique style of learning and deserves personalized teaching that helps them use their strengths to overcome their challenges. Tutoring should be fun and engaging, as well as providing the build blocks for success!

When it comes to teaching specialties, I have a wide range of skills and experience. With a perfect score on the SAT (2400) and scores in the 98% percentile on the GRE (170/170 Verbal, 167/170 Math, 5.5/6 Writing) and several years of test-prep tutoring experience (including teaching classes, tutoring, and developing new material), I am ideally suited to help with all your test prep needs whether it be a full semester of detailed preparation or a single session. I also help with college essays and applications, and can guide your child through the complicated college application process. Academically, I teach elementary to high level mathematics, English/writing, history, social sciences, & statistics/probability. I teach mathematics up to and including calculus (for instance, AP Calc AB/BC, probability, & all high school math as well as elementary math and pre-school preparation). I teach all aspects of English and writing and, as the author of two papers published in academic journals, am ideally qualified to help take your writing to the next level! Furthermore, I also teach European history, world history, US history & social sciences (sociology, psychology, anthropology, social studies). Statistics is one of my great passions and I can help you with statistics at all levels from the very basics to advanced data analysis. With so much experience helping both high achievers and students still figuring out how to unlock their potential across a huge range of ages and subjects, I am looking forward to helping you or your child succeed!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

As a sociology student, I have taken a wide variety of anthropology classes in addition to my sociology course work. I have taken course work on a wide variety of areas from anthropological methods to biological anthropology. I currently have a research paper on an anthropological study of different approaches to domestic violence among Ecuadorian institutions under review at an anthropological journal.

College Counseling

In my work as a test prep tutor, I have significant experience working on college applications and college readiness with students. After my own admission to Yale, I have helped students from my former high school perfect their own Ivy League applications and college essays. Finally, as a published author I am particularly qualified to help students take their writing to the next level and produce the perfect college essays and personal statements.

Differential Equations

I took a year long class in differential equations in high school in which I scored a 98%. In addition, I audited a further differential equations class in college. In my sociological research (I have two published papers and four national conference presentations), I used advanced statistical techniques which requires me to keep my mathematical skills (especially calculus and differential equations skills) up to date.

Logic

I have taken two classes in logic, one in high school and one in formal symbolic logic at the college level (in both classes I scored over a 96%). In my college symbolic logic class, I learned both symbolic logic and philosophical (verbal) logic. I have a strong understanding both of symbolic logic and of logical reasoning (I have informally tutored several friends for the logic sections of the LSAT too).

Mathematica

I have taken math classes through differential equations and two years of calculus, and have used Mathematica extensively in all these classes. During high school, I tutored other students in my calculus classes, including assisting them with learning Mathematica. I have also tutored younger students in familiarity with basic operations in Mathematica.

Public Speaking

I am accomplished public speaker, who has taken several courses in public speaking in both middle and high school. I have also presented findings from my sociological research at four national conferences, which involves describing my work to large groups of experts in my field. Thus, I am an extremely confident public speaker with significant experience of the pedagogy of public speaking.

Social Studies

As a sociology major who has also taken a wide variety of course working in political science, history, & anthropology, I have strong academic qualifications to teach social studies. Practically, I also have significant experience tutoring social studies particularly at the middle and high school level. The very first student that I tutored (when I was a freshman in high school 9 years ago) I tutored in social studies and I have continued to enjoy teach it since.

Sociology

I recently graduated with a BA in sociology from Yale, taking a variety of coursework from classical sociological theory to empirical methods. I also have several published papers in sociological journals & have presented at four national conferences in sociology. I have also worked for several summers as a research assistant at the International Survey Center, which runs sociological surveys.

Spanish

I have taken two years of advanced college Spanish, have lived in Ecuador for a semester & have completed a professional internship in a clinic in Ecuador. I have worked with students of Spanish of all ages and all experience levels ranging from complete beginners to heritage speakers looking to improve their grammar and writing.

STATA

I use STATA for most of my sociological writing, including the data analysis for my two published papers and four conference presentations. I am experience with complex programming including Instrumental Variable Models, Multi-Level Models, & Structural Equation Modeling, as well as the basics of descriptive statistics, regression analysis, ANOVA & the like. I have previously taught STATA to graduate students seeking to use it for their PhDs.

Study Skills

I have extensive experience tutoring study skills to students of all ages. From working with a dyslexic five year old in preparation for kindergarten - focusing on organization, patience when struggling with reading, and approaches to over coming learning challenges - to preparing college-bound high school seniors for the academic rigors of college, I have deep experience with teaching study skills at all levels. Finally, tutoring study skills has made up an important part of my tutoring in other subjects as many student problems stem not from the material itself but from a lack of understanding about how to go about learning it.

Track & Field

I ran track & field for three years in high school, including being team captain my senior year. During this time, as well as personally participating in events ranging from the 4x200 relay to the 3200 meter race I had substantial responsibility for designing and leading distance squad work outs, supervising warm ups and cool downs, & helping teach new team members. Furthermore, I made the state meet three years in a row.
