About Wagma

Hello!

I'm a former teacher and current PhD student. For the past 3 years I was rated highly effective by the IMPACT teacher evaluation system in Washington DC, one of the most rigorous teacher evaluation systems in the country based on a combination of factors but primarily in classroom observations. I love and miss teaching, and believe that working with students one on one will help me keep "one foot in the classroom" as I pursue my PhD in Education Policy. I also coached volleyball and softball while teaching in DC and am a proud aunt to a few adorable nephews and a niece so my experience with school aged kids is substantial. My strengths as a teacher and tutor are my ability to break down content, create metaphors, similarities and differences leading to real world connections that stick in the brain. I'm very organized, and can help students with organization, note taking and study skills, I've found that sometimes all a student needs are a few solid study habits and tricks to get right on track. My background is Biology, but I've taught a range of science subjects and also am able to work with middle school math and Algebra 1 and 2 (I taught a Physics class that was really an Algebra reinforcement class). I'm looking forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I taught for 5 years in a comprehensive high school in Washington DC as a full inclusion teacher. I worked directly with several children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD as well as many other learning disabilities on a day to day basis. I can help with organization, study skills, chunking and time management.

Biology

I am a licensed, highly effective Biology teacher in the District of Columbia. I majored in Biology as an undergraduate and taught the subject for five years.

College Counseling

I have extensive experience helping high school students apply for college as I was a high school teacher and coach for five years. For several years I served as the point of contact for seniors on my softball and volleyball team in terms of college applications. I helped brainstorm and edit personal statements and essays and tutored them in test preparation.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor K-6 students because I have a degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Additionally, I tutor my niece (3rd grade) and my nephew (6th grade), regularly as I live with my sister and her two kids. I also work on a research project (I am a PhD student at CU), that is centered in a writing methods course for elementary education. Through this research I work with 4th graders at an elementary school in Denver.

Softball

I coached softball for 2 years at a Washington D.C. high school.

Study Skills

I am a former high school teacher who taught a tested subject in a high need school. Part of my role as a teacher of a high stakes class was to teach students appropriate study skills to help them reach their academic potential. Study skills are a science, they can be learned, and I am experienced in teaching students how to effectively study in order to make the most use of their time to tackle large amounts of content. My philosophy when it comes to successful studying includes the creation of tools (diagrams, charts, notecards, etc.) to use during the studying process and strategic time management (appropriate chunking of content to review ahead of assessments).

Volleyball

I coached volleyball for 4 years at a Washington D.C high school.
