About James

Hello. I am currently a graduate student in Environmental Engineering at CU-Boulder. Before starting school this year I was a full time tutor. I also am still working for a local tutoring company, so I've been trained and have experience tutoring for a wide range of subjects and tests. I have tutored many students for ACT, SAT, ISEE, HSPT, GRE, and PSAT tests, as well as for academic courses in physics, AP physics, biology, AP biology, math up through AP Calculus, and all subjects at a middle school level.

My Background:
I graduated from Brown University in 2005 with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Since then, I have taught physics, biology, and math for 8 years at top tier private high schools. I truly love teaching and am dedicated to helping my students learn, improve, and have fun while doing it. I am adaptable to students of all abilities and learning styles and like the challenge of finding the best methods for my students success. Throughout my teaching career, I have greatly enjoyed working 1-on-1 with students and have found it the most efficient and rewarding way of teaching. I am easy to get along with, good humored, outgoing, a little silly, yet still demanding and serious about working hard to learn and improve.

Teaching Experience:
Kent Denver School, Denver, CO: 2011-2013 - taught 9th and 12th grade biology courses, physics, general science, coached tennis.
2014-present - Part Time High School Math Teacher.
Choate Rosemary Hall, Wallingford, CT: 2007-2011 - taught 9th and 10th grade physics and three different levels, coached tennis and hockey, was an in-residence dorm advisor, started and ran student environmental task force
Ecole d'Humanité, Hasliberg, Switzerland: 2005-2007 - taught math from algebra 1 through BC Calculus, physics, biology, and music, ran a dorm, advised various activities.

Standardized Test Scores:
GRE: 334 (168Q, 166 V, 5.5 W) - 96th, 96th, 93rd percentile, respectively
SAT: 1510 (800M, 710V)
SATII: Math 1C: 780, Match 2C: 800, Writing 760, Physics: 710
Currently Studying for the MCAT

Some Interests:
Tennis, Hockey, Snowboarding, Cycling, Environment & Sustainability

Travel:
I love to travel and try to do so as much as I can. While teaching, I led student trips in Switzerland, China, Guatemala, Tanzania, and Thailand. I have been to 35+ countries and it is a lifelong goal to have always been to more countries than my age (though I imagine that will get increasingly difficult!).

Say "hi," and ask any questions you have. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Excellent Teaching and Flexible Scheduling!! — My son has worked with many tutors, but James stood out. He felt James explained everything in a manner that was understandable. More so, the way he taught made things go fast, much faster. James was very responsive and worked with our tight schedule. All said, my son definitely will be working with James on an ongoing basis! ...
