About David

I am a former TA for organic chemistry at the University of Colorado at Boulder; if it's OChem you need help with, you can't do much better than me! At this point, I have helped many students increase their ACT scores by up to 5 (One from 25 to 30!) and their SAT scores by hundreds. If you're looking for a tutor to help your almost-adult optimize their university applications, I am the best available!

I am a 28 year old lover of language, science and mathematics pursuing a career in biochemistry. Until age 22, I was without focus in my life, having a dismal high school record and merely adequate grades--I applied to CU Boulder with a GPA of 2.5--in my undergraduate studies; however, change is always possible: I now have a GPA of 3.65. I have discovered an immense love for science and mathematics that I hope to share. This on top of my already long-standing passions of art and language. I'm an A student in Chemistry and Biology, I have been an amateur tutor and autodidact all my life and I have worked as a TA for the Organic Chemistry courses at CU Boulder, now I have an undergraduate degree in biochemistry in the same. I earned my high school diploma ahead of schedule, earning a 32 on the ACT exam and a 4/5 on the AP Language and Composition exam, and teaching high school students over the years has reminded me of what it was like in those days, making me an excellent choice for ACT/SAT study help. Furthermore, I have been diagnosed with ADD since age 11, and if this is something you and your child struggle with, I have ample experience as a student with ADD and a teacher of students with ADD.

I am a NO-NONSENSE tutor. I believe that almost everyone can become straight-A student with EFFICIENT effort. My focus is on: 1) improving fundamental understanding of material (e.g. forget "FOIL" and "cross-multiplication", these are shortcuts that mask what you're really doing!), 2) improving confidence (train yourself to understand what you understand, don't wallow in self doubt!), 3) helping students recognize the relationships between good health and good grades (DO NOT go into an exam tired!) and 4) the ABSOLUTE necessity of frequent practice (waiting in line? Practice mental arithmetic! Bored? Practice some vocabulary! It's easy and takes mere minutes!). Please note: this means that I am often blunt to the point of being brusque. I am your tutor, not your friend, and I am here to help you change your behavior to make you learn more effectively. I don't mince words or try to soften the blow: I will tell you what you are doing wrong and how you can get better. I try not to be rude, but I can be harsh. I have a gift for expressing complex ideas in ways that are easy to grasp, especially in regards to physics as it applies to chemistry, and I do so with the intent of providing a context to the subject matter that makes its importance immediately relevant and its consequences fascinating. If I can go from skipping school to full-fledged academia, so can you or your child (or both!).

"Unreliable; unorganized; unprofessional"

- Stuart, Boulder, CO on 10/26/14
David replied on 4/28/2017

This is a response I am writing 3 years after this review. I want to say that Stuart was absolutely correct, I failed him and his child, and it was entirely my fault. This review had a significant influence on me, and I have taken steps since then to improve my scheduling and organization, and these efforts have borne fruit. I want to offer Stuart a (severely) belated apology, and I hope his child has found all the success they deserve.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Great SAT prep

David did an excellent job in the session of SAT prep assessing my daughter's gaps in knowledge. His approach has definitely helped to identify areas of focus for her as she prepares. She also thought he was very approachable and kind.
