Availability: No available slots during the Spring 2015 semester
I have experience teaching and tutoring basic as well as complex scientific subjects. I am currently working on my PhD in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Colorado, Boulde. Additionally I have a M.S. in Environmental Engineering from UC Berkeley, and a B.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
At UC Berkeley I taught an introductory fluid mechanics course, for which I obtained outstanding student reviews. In the past I have also independently tutored engineering graduate students in physics, water chemistry, calculus, and fluid mechanics. Other technical subjects that I am available to tutor are middle-school and high-school and basic undergraduate math (algebra, geometry, pre-calc, calculus), and MATLAB programming.
I am a native Spanish speaker, so any of the technical subjects that I mentioned above in Spanish as well as English.
My teaching methodology is to aid my students in developing an intuition that will allow them to easily tackle complex problems, understand underlying principles, and independently overcome difficulties when faced with challenging material.
Feel free to contact me for information about my future availability. I look forward to hearing from you! Availability: No available slots during the Spring 2015 semester

Laura brings clarity to complex math and engineering subjects by building on basic concepts and thinking creatively about how to explain concepts with words, equations, drawings and even descriptive imagery. She's often saying things like "Imagine that you are a fluid particle..." and then starts drawing beautiful diagrams (she's multi-talented!). Her note-taking style is so readable, clear and digestible, a model that I've tried to follow because it brings such clarity when applying multiple equations to solve problems. All these tools help me understand the concepts, apply them in my work and ultimately remember them for exams and research. Her warm personality makes me comfortable enough to admit when I don't understand and not get stressed as I struggle to think through the next steps. She's such an outstanding tutor and an engaging person, I highly recommend her to students of any age. She'd be a very fun math and science tutor for kids as she's full of energy, creative on-the-fly approaches and very patient at the same time.
Laura is an excellent tutor. She is helping me with MATLAB programming, and she is very knowledgeable in the subject. She's also very flexible - willing to work on problem sets or go over fundamental MATLAB concepts and techniques. Between sessions, she makes sure that she is still reachable over email for any further questions. It's an absolute pleasure working with her and I feel more confident about my programming abilities.
Great tutor, good time management and a skilled teacher. Very quick to understand my tutoring needs, knowledgeable, and patient in explaining concepts until I understood. Cheerfully cleared up my confusion over some complex concepts and also helped with maths aspects - very helpful! Highly recommended.
Laura is great! She is super knowledgeable and very helpful. She can explain concepts in MATLAB very clearly and is very patient.
I highly recommend Laura as a tutor, she is extremely helpful and patient. She is very knowledgeable in the field of water chemistry, soil physics and hydrology. She is really good about walking you through all the steps necessary, not only to solve the problem but to truly understand the process and reasoning behind the equations. Laura encourages you to think about how to set up the problem and then walks you through it. Additionally, she is not only bright but also is fluent in Spanish. I enjoyed having her as my tutor because she is very passionate about the field.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have graduated with a Master's in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. While in school I taught an undergraduate level fluid mechanics class (CE100) for one semester, and tutored students in others (groundwater hydrology: CE173, vadose zone hydrology: CE202A, water chemistry: CE105, and introduction to fluid mechanics CE100).
Currently, I work as a fluid mechanics researcher at the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at UC Berkeley.
I have over 5 years of experience using MATLAB for different applications. In the past I have tutored undergraduate engineering students on the use of MATLAB to help solve math problems. To tutor MATLAB programming I will create a series of exercises designed to show the student the specific tools that they will need for their desired application. I am a trained engineer, with an M.S. from UC Berkeley, and a B.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
