About Tony

I'm a recent graduate of Southeastern University with an English degree. I love reading and writing and have always been passionate about becoming a better writer and helping others do the same. I love studying all kinds of literature, from Tolkien to Faulkner to the Bible. I love grammar (hard to believe, but it's true), and I am also very interested in linguistics and studying foreign languages, specifically Russian and Spanish.

As far as tutoring experience, I have three younger siblings and have helped them numerous times with their Spanish or reading homework. Many of my friends have come to me for advice on literary assignments regarding Hamlet or Tolkien. Recently, I tutored a Korean exchange student in English basics and, although he is back in South Korea, we still maintain communication via email.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

After my conversion to Christianity in 2010, I became a voracious reader of the Bible, reading through it completely almost three times since then. I recently completed my degree at Southeastern University, which requires each student to take enough Bible-related classes to graduate with a minor in Biblical studies. I also took several classes in addition to those required, on specific subjects such as Hebrew Wisdom Literature or Biblical Hermeneutics.

I have always loved English as a language since I was little. I graduated from college with an English degree because of my love for the language. I've tutored foreign and inexperienced students in the past as well.

Growing up, I was always one of the only people who cared about using proper grammar. I work to make everything I say coherent and functional within the English language, and I actively seek out ways to improve my grammar. I have taken several college-level courses on advanced grammar.

I love to read classics. Over the course of my English degree, I read proficiently not just what was assigned, but several books outside of the classroom to make my knowledge more well-rounded. I can pick up books like The Sound and the Fury or Crime and Punishment for fun. I read to study characters and the human condition.

While I seem to have trouble proofreading my own work, I'm more than proficient at finding errors in another person's writing. Grammatical, syntactical or spelling mistakes seem to jump out to me whenever I'm reading. Few people are as passionate as I am about proofreading in general, but there is an amount of joy I get from dealing with minutiae like that.

I read everything, from classic literature to pop fiction, because I believe it all has something to offer. I often try to exude a love of reading that makes it clear how beneficial and enjoyable it can be (I've converted several of my friends because of this). I always try to instill interest in reading in everyone I meet, because I believe, if someone doesn't like to read, they just haven't found the right book.

Being an avid reader is one of the best ways to increase your vocabulary, and I would definitely describe myself as "avid." I always keep a notecard and a pencil with me when I'm reading, to write down any new words to look up later. I love to learn new words and explore the intricate functions of the language beyond what we say in everyday speech.

I have always been called to be a writer, ever since I was a young child. It is my means of expression and one of the most valuable, since it encompasses a part of life that everyone does instinctually - that is, storytelling. I'm overtly passionate about my own writing and about bringing out the writing ability in others.
