About Kathleen

As a high school English teacher for twenty-five years, I have had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of students in the United States, Singapore, and Jordan. My experience, coupled with two master's degrees---one in English literature, and the other in teaching English as a second language---have helped to make my instruction highly effective in developing students' understanding, skills, and ability to think critically. My first responsibility is to understand what students already understand and what they need to learn. To gain this information, I focus on asking open-ended questions that encourage students to reflect, recall, and synthesize information. I believe the purpose of an education is to empower students to think for themselves. To do this, they need to develop skills (composing, analyzing, reading, listening, and thinking) and habits of mind (for example, self-confidence, curiosity, skepticism, fair-mindedness, and integrity). I find the process of working one-on-one with students deeply satisfying, and I look forward to working with you! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I have over twenty-five years of experience in designing lessons to guide students
to identify the specific skills and concepts they need to focus on; organize their preparations for the exam to make the most of their time; use sound principles of effective practice; develop their abilities to think, read, and write; learn and apply the test-taking techniques that will help them achieve higher scores on Advanced Placement, SAT, and ACT exams.

English

Education:
B.A., Stanford University (English/Creative Writing)
M.A., University of California at Los Angeles (English)
M.A., University of Hawaii at Manoa (Applied Linguistics/ESL)

Professional experience:
26 years in private high schools in Hawaii (teacher, department head)

ESL/ESOL

I earned a master's degree in ESL from the University of Hawaii, and over the course of my 26-year career as a high school teacher, I have taught students learning English as a second language in Singapore and in the Middle East.

Study Skills

As a teacher for 26 years, I have worked closely and extensively with students helping them organize and use their time efficiently. I have taught them how to take notes, annotate texts effectively, set goals, break complex tasks down into simpler steps, and recall information. I use these methods all the time to accomplish my own goals!

TOEFL

I have a master's degree from the University of Hawaii (1982) in Applied Linguistics/Teaching English as a Second Language. In addition, I have taught in high schools overseas: two years in Singapore, working with students whose first languages included dialects of Chinese and Malay, and three years in Jordan, working with students whose first languages were Arabic and Korean. Along the way, I studied Mandarin and Arabic to gain an insight into the students' understanding of the structure of the English language.

Writing

I have designed and taught writing courses for over twenty-six years, and I have written and published my own work. I work one-on-one with students asking them questions to help them develop, express, and organize their ideas, teaching the process of developing a piece of writing, the principles of rhetoric, and the mechanics of the language.
