About Christine

I have a master's degree in Speech Pathology and worked for over 25 years in the public schools. I also worked with adult stroke patients and brain-injured adults. In the schools I worked with students with many different types of language and learning disabilities. I received training on various reading methods as well as ESL methods. I worked most recently as a clinical supervisor at CU Boulder in the early literacy program.

I had a Colorado teaching license, which has since expired. I am a certified Speech Pathologist and hold a CO license in that field. I have been a tutor for 5 years. I love being able to work 1:1 with children and adults to help them blossom.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have worked with ADD/ADHD students K-12 in the public schools. Some of these students have been on medication, others not. I can help with creating optimal study environments and helping to organize materials so that the student can locate/turn in assignments in a timely manner. I can also teach test preparation skills that are useful for day-to-day quiz and test taking. I use mnemonics and graphic organizers to maximize recall of important facts/data.

I am willing to help applicants in the areas of Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension on the ASVAB. I may be of assistance in other areas, as well, but those would be the best match for my skills.

I have worked as part of an interdisciplinary team in the public schools for over 25 years. I administered evaluations and provided direct 1:1 or small group lessons in this area. I currently supervise graduate students at CU in Boulder who are working with dyslexic students in the clinic.

I have had training in Language!, Wilson, DIBELS, Lindamood, etc.

I have taught reading skills to preschoolers, elementary and junior high students, as well as learning disabled young adults.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked in elementary school classrooms for the last 29 years, before retiring. I co-taught in the areas of language arts, reading and writing/spelling. I have also co-taught science labs in the elementary schools. My focus was on the language and comprehension of the units being taught by the classroom teacher. I assisted the teacher in differentiating her instruction to make it more accessible to special education students and second language learners.

I have worked in regular and special education language arts classrooms at all grade levels K-12.

I have worked with ESL students in preschool through high school in the Boulder Valley School system. Most of these were children whose home language was Spanish, but others were from Russia, Africa, China, etc.

I have taken many ESL classes as well as methods classes for teaching core curriculum to students for whom English is not their first language.

My background in speech pathology is a plus in understanding the development of language skills.

I have experience helping high school drop outs and adults prepare for their GEDs. I am best able to help in the areas of language arts/writing/reading.

My background as a speech pathologist has prepared me to understand and use phonics to teach early literacy skills.

I have additional training in several phonics programs (Language!, Lindamood, etc.). I have administered several phonics screening instruments and assessments as part of a Special Education team. I am familiar with interpreting these scores and planning a course of treatment.

I have worked in Kindergarten and first grade classrooms as well as preschools teaching individuals, small groups and entire classrooms about early phonemic awareness skills.

I have taught reading skills to elementary, middle school and high school students in regular and special education classrooms.

SAT Reading

I have taught vocabulary enrichment classes through Lifelong Learning and have co-taught in language arts classrooms in BVPS.

Special Needs

I have a Colorado teaching certificate in the area of Speech Pathology and have co-taught in Special Education classrooms from preschool through high school age. My area of specialty is early literacy. I have worked with children with autism, ADD/ADHD, significant cognitive deficits, Down's syndrome, FAS, etc.

Study Skills

I have worked in Special Ed classrooms in Boulder Valley Public schools for 29 years. I helped students with test-taking and organizational skills. I use graphic organizers and mnemonics to assist in recall. I employed color-coding to help students find and organize materials quickly.

I have worked with an occupational therapist in co-therapy situations and am able to assist students with handwriting and pencil grip. I have also worked in regular and special education classrooms to help students of all ages with the mechanics of writing such as spelling, punctuation and grammar. I have used graphic organizers to help students organize their thoughts prior to writing. I have taken editing classes to improve my own writing skills and have worked with a group of women on creative writing projects.
