In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For the ACT English Section (Grammar and Writing), I go over test sections with the student, highlighting the types of questions, giving further examples and a review of the specific Grammar concepts. As we do this, I compose a custom handout for the student, based on his/her needs.
For the Reading Section, I cover the types of questions, skim-reading, looking for key and transition words and handling time constraints. As with the English Section, I construct a custom set of hints for the student.
I give students the math hand-out I've developed, covering algebra, geometry and trig, going over it in detail, as well as covering any other math operations that require review. Students also receive a grammar guide that I discuss with them. For math, English and science, I assign practice sections from the ACT Official Guide. We carefully go over the questions, identifying any problem areas to address. I write custom 'hints' for the students as we discuss the questions/solutions. Equally as crucial as the subject matter, we discuss strategies for the best performance on the ACT!
I make sure the student has a good background in arithmetic and, specifically, signed number operations and order of operations. Then I go on to variables, equations, expressions and the usual Algebra I curriculum of more advanced equations, exponents, simplifying, factoring and dealing with word problems.
I review Algebra I concepts, then go on to more advanced Algebra II and College Algebra topics, such as exponents, roots, quadratic and higher level equations, advanced factoring, Rational Root Theorem, analysis of graphs, complex number operations and other usual topics in a College Algebra course.
I received my Bachelor's degree in English (and Mathematics) and have tutored Writing, Grammar and Reading to the area's students. I've also worked with students on all sections of the ACT and SAT.
Further, after completing an ESL major (during my Master's degree study), I taught Grammar, Writing, Reading and Speaking/Listening, both overseas and in the U.S. Over the last few years, I have met one-on-one with several non-native English speakers/learners as a 'Conversation Partner.'

When I work with students preparing for the GED, I go over questions with the students to determine their areas of need. Then I give Math, Science, English and Social Studies background and review, as needed. There is plenty of practice and discussion, with custom hints and strategies written during meetings and other handouts prepared to match with the student's needs.
There are several textbooks used for Geometry and Advanced Geometry, depending upon the school. Generally, I work with the student on terminology, figures and their characteristics, and mastering the process of completing proofs and solving other types of problems for the assigned homework and preparing for tests.
In teaching Phonics, I go over sets of basic single letter sounds, practice words with these sounds and possibly practice reading short passages, if the student has started learning to read. I also use the same technique with two and three letter combinations. It is essential to take these steps with complete attention to the child's mastery at each level, in order to prevent any confusion.
In my Prealgebra tutoring, I work with the student on order of operations, positive and negative number operations, exponents, graphing, formulas, variables and introduction to algebraic equations and expressions.
For SAT Preparation, I review Algebra, Geometry and English Grammar concepts with students, complete with handouts. The students do practice test sections, and we go over them in detail, customized to each student with a hand-written hint sheet at the time. Grammar review helps with the section called "Writing." I also give customized hints for the "Reading" section, as well the Math section, as needed, and generalized test-taking hints.
