About Hannah

As a licensed Colorado teacher, I have proven my dedication to excellence by helping children close the achievement gap in both literacy and math. I love teaching children the strategies that will make learning accessible, and have successfully helped even reluctant learners! Nothing makes me happier than when students see the far reaching fruits of their labor coming back on report cards, and in their general confidence. I encourage students to be active participants in goals setting, and routinely check-in to determine new goals.

I am experienced as both a classroom educator and tutor. I have previously taught in primary grades in St. Vrain Valley School District. In addition, I have completed a graduate level fellowship with the University of Colorado's Partners In Education (PIE) program. As a tutor, I emphasize multimodal learning and integrate instruction to target both subject areas and skill acquisition. Mendi Y., interventionist at Legacy Elementary, spoke highly of my students' achievements; she said, "(Hannah) was able to isolate areas of weakness in her students and implement successful strategies to help these students close their gap in performance. I saw this happen again and again in her room."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I recently attended the Diverse Learners Conference in Denver, which has helped me better understand ADD and ADHD as learning styles. I help children set and monitor their own goals in both academics and behavior. I provide multiple modalities (kinesthetic, visual and verbal) to support information processing. I use organizers to promote information retention. When needed, I provide refocusing tasks that simulate both hemispheres of the brain. In addition, I can provide a space that is free from distractions.

Algebra 1

I teach mathematical reasoning and logic to support the development of a strong understanding of the function of numbers. I believe meaningful engagement is key to learning about numeric definitions, properties, and procedures. Modeling and solving functions which illustrate story problems related to sciences is one of my favorite tasks!

Dyslexia

I am experienced in supporting dyslexia and unidentifiable disabilities displaying similar symptoms. I am familiar with the Take Flight curriculum, and I utilize this approach. I have provided a structured, systematic, multisensory system for gaining phonological awareness to children, aged 7 to 13. At the Diverse Learners Conference in Denver, I developed effective strategies for engaging dyslexic students in meaningful ways. I coach children in segmenting words into individual phonemes, and blending phonemes together into words. I also emphasize rhyming and common English language word patterns.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a licensed elementary educator, I love to coach children in strategies that will provide math and reading efficacy.

I teach all components of literacy, including: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. (See Phonics and Reading descriptions). I also teach comprehension and fluency in mathematics. I teach children strategy development and metacognitive techniques through kinesthetic, visual and linguistic modalities.

I will ask your child to explain his/her learning to you (parent/guardian) as the natural conclusion to each lesson. This is a celebration time which gives children the opportunity to review, reflect, and show off new competencies!

Elementary Math

I have done classroom research on instructional skill development and effective mathematical practice. As the result of this research, I developed a tool-kit of lessons that provide a solid foundation in number sense, spatial reasoning and grouping strategies. I ensure students develop strong mathematical reasoning through the use of kinesthetic and visual manipulatives. I provide authentic tasks, and help children build fluency through mathematical games.

ESL/ESOL

Professional development (St. Vrain Valley District) in ELL best-practices, has shaped my understanding of vocabulary development as the gateway to comprehension. As a general education teacher, I have fostered language acquisition through work with an NEP, first grade student. I also tutor several LEP students, between the ages of 10 and 45. I use sentence frames to promote the development of conversational skills. In addition, I teach vocabulary development through alphabet- and content-based pictorial journals. I use bilingual books to build comprehension and vocabulary with students who are already reading in Spanish.

Phonics

As a first and second grade teacher who has worked with diverse learning groups, I have experience instructing children in phonological awareness and the alphabetic principal. I use Elkonin Boxes (with magnetic chips and paper boxes) to instruct students in segmenting and blending words together. I have students manipulate and identify word rimes (this is a technical word for the graphemes composing a word ending), consonants, vowels and consonant blends. I also do word family and vowel sorts to identify common patterns found in words. In addition, I instruct students in the creation of authentic tools to promote a generalized understanding of English letter-sound correspondences.

Prealgebra

I teach mathematical inquiry and reasoning, as well as definitions, rules and procedures. At this level, I emphasize solidifying an understanding of the structure and properties of numbers. I help my students identify appropriate methods for making comparisons between, and drawing conclusions about these numbers. Furthermore, I introduce data and graphs to make predictions and generalizations about patterns, variability, change, and order in number sets.

Reading

I am an experienced reading teacher, and I will help students hone both comprehension and fluency skills.

To boost fluency, I use a range of tools including: level-appropriate books, decoding strategies, word/sound manipulation, generalization strategies, word sorts, Fry's word lists, customized word lists, and modeled expression.

To enhance comprehension, I coach students to make predictions, journal, utilize organizers, and retell/summarize stories.

Series 63

I was licensed by FINRA in Aug 2015. Exam passed at 88%.

Series 7

Licensed by FINRA in Aug 2015. Exam passed at 90%.

Spanish

I teach Spanish semantics, conjugation, and vocabulary. I have earned a B.A. in Spanish at CU Boulder (2007), after two studies abroad, the first through AFS in high school. I have studied in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, where I also performed volunteer work at a Home for Disabled Children (HONIM), as well as in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Special Needs

I use modeling, gradually release of responsibility, repetition, and creative engagement with academic materials to scaffold learning. I stimulate sensory processing through cross-lateral movement routines, breath control activities and other re-focusing techniques. I have used Wilson (Orton-Gillingham) and Lindamood Bella curricula with tier 2 and 3 intervention groups in my first and second grade classroom. I have used Take Flight for individual tutoring, and frequently utilize these strategies with all my students.

Study Skills

I coach students in organizational techniques, note taking, and resource utilization. In addition, I provide instruction in the fundamental concepts of the target subject. To prepare for tests, I help students identify key concepts and organize notes. I am a licensed k-8 educator in the state of Colorado.

Writing

I work with students to develop their personal voice by accessing their own memories and making connections to texts. I encourage students to engage meaningfully with text by responding in writing. Reader's response offers the opportunity to bolster comprehension, learn orthographic techniques, and practice semantic editing. In creative writing, I also emphasize story planning/idea formation, vocabulary, and editing.

Exceptional tutor - 2nd grade — We selected Hannah to work with our 2nd grader who has been struggling a bit to keep up in reading and math. He is one of the youngest in the class and really needed some creative one-on-one time. Hannah was extremely responsive to my emails and phone calls. She met with me for the first visit, showing me selected books that were exactly what interests him. Her math activities are very creative ...
