I am currently a physics instructor at Front Range Community College at the Larimer campus. I began tutoring in high school. I studied physics and math at the George Washington State University (Bachelors in Science) and then attended Colorado State University's graduate program where I received my M.S. in Physics. I have had over 4 years of teaching experience at CSU, which include many hours in tutoring, instructing physics labs, and running recitation style lectures/HW review.

Working at CSU I realized how fun teaching/tutoring can be: I get to continually work on and discuss the subjects I love, while using the skills I've learned to help others reach that understanding. I find that professors often lose site of what it was like to be a student in the math and sciences and forget how to better communicate the subject. Being a recent grad (and thus student), I remember the troubles I had when I first started learning, and the techniques that helped me understand and master my fields.

I find that a key to studying the sciences is to first master the basics. Often courses skip over explaining the underlying points of a concept. For example, I often hear students have trouble understanding what a "field" (electric, magnetic...) really represents, thus making it harder to grasp more complicated subjects that utilize these fields. I aim to help students solidify their understanding of the fundamental concepts such as this in order to better tackle the more advanced work.

Studying physics for over 8 years has helped me change the way I think, especially with regards to problem solving. Physics certainly wasn't easy when I started; it takes a very different type of thinking than what most people (myself included) is initially used to. Having struggled initially, I had to truly push myself to fully grasp what is happening at ever step in the introductory physics curriculum. I eventually found the methods/techniques I needed to master physics, whether it be the conceptual or mathematical aspects. As a grad student at CSU, I worked as both a teaching and research assistant. Teaching at CSU has helped me go beyond developing techniques that work for me by helping me learn to better communicate these techniques to others studying physics. Working in (high energy and condensed matter) labs has further taught me how the physics directly applies to the real world.

In short, I remember what it was like to be a student, confused by the abstract subjects in math and science, and I have the knowledge and skills to help others reach those light bulb moments. Whether it is solidifying the fundamentals or using what you already know to push further, I hope to help students better there grasp these subjects in a manner that is helpful and meaningful to the individual. I welcome recommendations, requests, and/or suggestions that may direct me to better help you or future students. I am open to discussing how I can help you as an individual and I look forward to answer any further questions or to schedule a lesson!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have been tutoring math, particularly Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, since I was in high school, taking more of a teaching role in grad school. All these years of teaching have helped develop my understanding and skill at teaching math. I find that in order to progress, one must master the fundamentals. I hope to help students solidify there understanding of the basics as we learn new subjects. With a minor in math and B.S. and M.S. in physics, I have been working with and utilizing various levels of mathematics (including Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry) for many years.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

Differential equations are a key component to any work in physics, thus being a primary concept throughout my studies. In addition to an M.S. in physics, I obtained a math minor, primarily by adding multiple differential equations courses to my studies. These included Ordinary DE, Partial DE, and both an undergraduate and graduate level Mathematics of Physics course. Differential equations are ideal for representing the evolution of physical quantities, thus as a physics grad student, differential equations are inseparable from most of the work I've done.

Feeling Confident

Thank you Mathew! Elijah felt really confident leaving his session and it was so nice to see him excited about algebra instead of scared of it! He said you were really cool, laid back, smart, and you made him feel really comfortable!! Thanks again and we look forward to his next session.

Very helpful

I am taking physics and I am struggling with how to set up or make the graph of the word problems. Mathew help explain the problem and showed me a trick to setting them up.

Excellent and Knowledgeable Tutor

I"ve been working with Mathew for a few months now in Physics 2. He comes very prepared with a deep understanding of the material we are going to work on which is a big time saver. He redirects wrong thinking while explaining in an easy way the correct way to go about things. He also has a very good understanding of the math behind the concept. He has taken the time to understand my learning style which makes the material come that much easier to me. I have a very busy schedule and I have always appreciated how flexible he is in when we can meet, and even very helpful for a quick question or clarifiction. He really cares about what he is helping me with, and helps a lot with testing strategies along with the difficult material. I hope that I can continue to work with him as long as I can.
