About Breanna

I have always had a great appreciation for learning and teaching. My current role as a postdoctoral researcher involves mentoring a lot of new students and introducing them to the concepts and experiments we use in our lab. I have significant experience as a teacher and mentor, but also as a learner, so I am very conscientious of how much a student can handle at one time, and how to take different approaches to tackle a problem. There is nothing I love more than helping someone to understand a new concept that changes their view of the world around them.

In regards to my experience as a learner and teacher:
I took multiple Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school and tested out of my first year of Biology in college. I obtained my B.S. in Biology from Regis University in 2009. During college, I served as a tutor for numerous subjects, including essay-writing, Physics, general Biology, Anatomy, Spanish, and more.

I proceeded directly to graduate school at the University of Denver, and earned my PhD in 2014. During my last 4 years of graduate school, I was employed by the university as a Teaching Assistant (TA). I taught laboratory courses in Genetics, Microbiology, Concepts in Ecology and Evolution, Molecular Biology, Human Physiology, and Biology for Non-Majors. I am very comfortable in a mentoring role and can work with a variety of students of all different levels of understanding.

I look forward to helping you achieve your goals!

I have a PhD in Biology and experience as a TA in Genetics, Microbiology, Concepts in Ecology and Evolution, Molecular Biology, Human Physiology, and Biology for Non-Majors. I also have one-on-one tutoring experience in college and graduate school
and mentoring experience with new students in my current job. In addition, I also have 10 years of classroom experience and stellar grades at each level.

I am mostly available evenings and weekends.

Please contact me if you would like more information or to set up a tutoring session.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I hold a PhD in Biology. I earned a 5 on the AP Biology exam in high school, and won a full-tuition scholarship for my score on a competitive exam in the subject. I taught Biology as a laboratory TA for 4 years in graduate school, and in my current role as a postdoctoral researcher, I mentor students on a regular basis. I pride myself in my ability to tutor students at all levels, from brand-new learners to advanced graduate students.

English

I took advanced courses in English throughout high school and college, during which time I also tutored in this subject. I graduated from Regis University after completion of a philosophy/literature-based thesis. I scored a 5 on the AP English exam, and also obtained top scores in the writing sections of the GRE and MCAT. I have experience helping others to prepare for the writing portions of these exams.

Genetics

I taught 4 years of Genetics Laboratory classes as the Teaching Assistant at the University of Denver while obtaining my PhD in Biology. I designed and presented/administered PowerPoint slides, quizzes and lectures. My dissertation also included a significant amount of genetics research in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, and genetic manipulation including PCR- and vector-based cloning.

GRE

I obtained high scores (90th percentile or greater) on both the Quantitative and Verbal sections of the GRE and the highest score attainable in Analytical Writing.

I have 4 years of college teaching experience as a laboratory Teaching Assistant, so I am capable of instructing students with varying skill levels.

Further, I utilize math and writing skills daily in my job, and have 7 years of experience mentoring graduate students in these skills. I not only possess the ability to obtain high GRE scores, but also the ability to pass those skills on to others.

Microbiology

While obtaining my PhD in Biology, I utilized Microbiology techniques to perform research, and acted as a Teaching Assistant for the university course in Microbiology for 2 years.

In addition to teaching concepts and techniques, I helped students understand the real-world applications for the course material, and prepare independent projects, experiments, and formal lab reports.

Writing

I worked in the Writing Center at my high school all 4 years. In college I participated in the Regis University Honors Curriculum, which places a strong emphasis in writing. During this time, I tutored fellow students in the program and helped them with their assignments. Completion of the program required submission of a formal written thesis (available online from the Regis library).

At the end of college, I obtained the highest score possible in the writing sections for both the GRE and the MCAT. I then taught for 4 years as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Denver.

Finally, I perform regular editing work for co-workers, friends and family members to help them improve the quality of their writing.

I have extensive experience helping others with their writing skills, and take great joy in helping to transform rough drafts into admirable essays.

Great tutor, worth the investment!

Breanna taught me to present my writing in a more clear and concise way, which made it stronger with very little modification. She was patient and reassuring. I appreciated how she gave me options and let me decide how to apply the edits. I have only worked with her once and I am looking forward to meeting with her several times in the future. I feel more confident in my ability to take my writing
