Most of life I have been in the creative arts. I started painting when I was about fifteen being heavily influenced by my grandfather who was also a painter and studied at the Chicago Art Institute. I then went to Montana State University, Billing and receiver my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, I then studied at the University of Iowa where I studied painting and cast metal sculpture. However, I returned to Montana where I studied and received my Master of Fine Arts Degree in painting at the University of Montana. Its hard to get away from the beautiful landscapes and blue ribbon fishing that Montana has to offer.
My tutoring methods will involve a hands on approach. I like to discuss with the student what they hope to achieve by working with me. All of my classes will include lessons to give the student a historical and contemporary knowledge of the subject matter at hand.
I strive to pursue the intrinsic unity between the practice and theory of art. Beyond building a foundation on skills and training in techniques, the study of art involves gaining both an understanding of visual thinking and an awareness of the histories, issues and concepts that bear on the collimation and role of the visual arts in our culture today. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have twelve years of art education. During that time I have had to take many art history classes. It still remains one of my favorite subjects. Studying art history gives us a unique insight into the history of man and how human beings grew and matured visually. Art history also teaches us how to look at art and break it down by style, form, color, etc. so that we have a better understanding of what we are looking at. It also teaches us how to critique art. In general, it opens another part of our seeing.
