About Eileen

I am a graduate of a top 50 private research institution in the New England area. There I received my BS in biochemistry, graduating cum laude with a GPA just a little over 3.5. During my undergraduate years I spent my free time volunteering in a number of research laboratories and tutoring local children at a YMCA in Boston. My research experiences have focused on molecular biology, biochemistry, and analytical chemistry. One great experience that I was afforded by my research was the opportunity to conduct seven months of field research at Palmer Station, Antarctica on the West Antarctic Peninsula. There I studied how climate change effects the embryologic development of Antarctic icefish.

I am attending the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Aurora, CO for a doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program. Being a pharmacist means that I need to be an expert at biological and chemical sciences, so tutoring children in these areas helps to ensure that I remain the same level of mastery of the material that I have had while an undergraduate.

I have used algebra almost daily since I took the highest level of algebra I offered in 8th grade. Calculus, of which I have completed a number of courses, is based upon algebraic functions and concepts. In the past I have successfully tutored students in algebra. I am able to take an abstract and complex concept like algebra and break it down into simpler terms for young students to understand. As a result, I believe that I am a great tutor for algebra.

I majored in biochemistry at a rigorous research-based university in Boston. I have succeeded in my coursework for the sciences. Furthermore, I scored a perfect score for the biology section on my PCAT and a 97th percentile score for the chemistry section on the PCAT. I have also conducted lab-based and field-based research involving biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and genetics. As a result, I believe that I have a strong knowledge of these subjects and am capable of tutoring students in the sciences. I have unofficially tutored my peers and students a couple of grades below me in the past, and they have always walked away with a stronger understanding of the subject and better grades.

I am eager to help. I'm a nerd for science in a number of ways (after all - who goes to the end of the world for their research project?), and I think that I can help spread my passion for biology to you. When you love what you're doing, it makes studying a whole lot easier. I have also come up with some great study skills for myself to help me learn the material as I went through school. I have been successful in my degree programs in the past, and I am confident that you can as well. I would love to have the opportunity to tutor you and help you get a better grasp of what you're learning in school. Science and math are my forte, and there's no reason for why they can't be yours as well with a little bit of help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Received "A" grades for all college English and composition courses
Received "A" grades in college-level calculus courses
Tutored high school students in algebra I and English grammar
Tutored middle school students in study skills

Biology

Graduated cum laude with a degree in biochemistry
Worked in a molecular biology laboratory for 4 years
Studied effects of climate change on Antarctic icefish at Palmer Station, Antarctica
Received an "A" in general biology

Genetics

I have worked in a genetics laboratory for 4 years, and I have isolated, cloned, and sequenced 3 genes for 2 different species of fish. I have also taken a number of genetics courses while an undergraduate, obtaining high grades in each course. In one of the laboratory courses, I bread fruit flies and analyzed my data to determine which genes are recessive, dominant, linked, etc. I have tutored peers and students a few years younger than me in the subject by using drawings, diagrams, flashcards, and mnemonics.
