About Chelsea

The driven force behind my teaching is that I want to help to close the achievement gap. Growing up in the inner city, I experienced the negative effect of low teacher expectations. In my classroom I set high standards for my students despite their background. Having said that, I feel overjoyed at the possibilities that lay ahead. Creative Lesson plans and boundless energy are what I consider to be my hallmarks.

One of my greatest strengths is my ability to work with all students and cater their tutoring based on need. I have worked with emotional disturbed children in an affective needs classroom and now I am teaching 7th grade in an urban school setting at Florida Pitt Waller in Green Valley Ranch. This year my students grew 25% in Reading from 50% to 75 %( Benchmark Assessment) and grew 30% points in writing from 37% Proficient to 67% Proficient (Benchmark Assessment). I mention this because I believe that all children have the ability to learn and grow. There are many challenges working with youth from the inner city, but this is my passion and I feel like I can do the most good with children I relate to.

As a leader at my school I have encouraged other teachers to build better relationships with their students and incorporate culturally responsive curriculum. As you will note, I have a Masters in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelors in Political Science and English from the University of Denver. In addition to that, I have had multiple trainings that include Crisis Intervention and No-Nonsense Nurturing. I grew up in Park Hill and consider myself to be very well rounded. As a teacher I set high expectations for my students and have made tremendous gains on state standardized testing and district testing.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
