I have taught in the United States and in Japan. I have had experience in teaching 1 year olds up to 90 year olds. This last year, I taught in Denver in a classroom of students in levels kindergarten to third grade reading and math levels. It is a pleasure for me to watch students ability in reading grow. Using goal setting and tracking, each student takes ownership of his or her learning, and they become independent readers and mathematicians by linking their classroom goal to their life-long goal.
I love to watch the transformation of students from the beginning of our school year to the end because students become keepers of their dreams, and show their determination to work towards their aspirations, no matter the obstacles. Tutoring is another avenue for students to realize potential and see skill develop over time. This experience with malleable intelligence can transform a student's school experience from struggle to opportunity for success, beyond the summer tutoring sessions.
I taught English in Japan to children and adults. We worked hard, and laughed hard everyday. I also taught kindergarten students for three years. Using DIBELS benchmarks, and AIMS benchmarks, all students grew significantly. The most growth occurred with students who attended my after-school tutoring sessions three times a week.
I have a Master's in elementary education, and certification in two states. I understand the foundations of each subject, and that finding student interests is essential to academic growth. By tailoring each student needs to his or her interest, the student is more comfortable taking risks, thus pushing himself or herself to learn more.
I have access to phonics lessons that have companion books that allow students to practice skills immediately in an authentic text. This allows students to gain confidence in his or her reading ability. With confidence, students grow quickly and are more willing to take risks outside the tutoring session.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
