About Elizabeth

Hello! My name is Elizabeth and I have taught in the Denver Metro area for 10 years. I have taught all grades 3-8, and specialize in literacy (reading and writing), ESL, social studies, gifted and talented education, and test prep skills. I have also had great success in helping students transition to middle school. This includes teaching organizational skills and effective study habits, and even confidence building. I have served on building and district leadership teams, curriculum development teams, and led building and district professional development in the areas of technology in the classroom, writing instruction, effective classroom management techniques, and Restorative Justice. But my real passion is the work I do one-on-one with students. Making meaningful connections and nurturing positive relationships with youth helps me quickly build rapport and credibility with students. This allows me to really understand them as learners si that I can best meet their needs.

My objective as a tutor is provide students with the educational tools they need to build a repertoire of learning strategies, while developing self-confidence and motivation to succeed. I believe that through building relationships and getting to know a student, a tutor can really understand what motivates a student to learn. (I even coach teachers in effective teaching practices that really make a big difference in teaching and motivating students.) I am skilled at meeting the needs of a variety of learners, from students with learning and/or physical disabilities to kids who simply need a boost and some extra support in a particular skill or subject. I am great with English Language Learners, and have a Masters degree in teaching English as a Second Language. I also have vast experience and success in supporting learners with ADD/ADHD, and learners on the Autism Spectrum.

I can be flexible with times and locations based on your needs. Please contact me if you would like to learn more about my teaching style to see if I'd be a good match for your tutoring needs.

I am here to help and look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have worked with students with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders) for five years in a public school setting. I've created academic and behavior plans that support student learning to the highest degree. I've also worked one-on-one with learning specialists to help provide the most meaningful educational experiences to students on the Spectrum. My work as an Educational Consultant has also given me ample experience in setting up routines and structures for children and adults with Autism.

Common Core

I've been part of curriculum planning teams at the district and school level to address the the changeover from state standards to common core. I've also taught New Teacher seminars to help teachers new to the profession get acclimated to the new standards and the rigor required of students to master these standards. I've also been teaching these standards with students for as long as they've been around.

I have worked with children and adults with dyslexia (and dysgraphia) for 10 years. I use proven strategies to help people with dyslexia to learn to read, write, and give speeches with confidence. As a literacy teacher, I have attended many trainings that specifically address how to improve literacy skills for people with dyslexia.

I have 10 years of experience as a writing teacher or tutor, which includes helping kids with handwriting. I have 4 years of experience of explicitly teaching cursive handwriting, and have always taught students to use their best handwriting on assignments big and small. When students have shown that handwriting is a struggle, I work with those students one-on-one to help them improve their handwriting. Sometimes they need to write with a different sized utensil, or with a different grip. Often times kids need to slow down and practice the basic letters a few times before moving on. I have the expertise and years of working with students to know what they need to work on next to improve their handwriting, wherever they are at in the process of learning.

I have been an Elementary Teacher for 6 years. I attended CORE (Consortium of Reading Excellence) seminar and passed 2013. This was a refresher course in teaching reading skills to struggling readers. I also run after-school reading tutor groups 3 days a week at my current teaching position

Public Speaking

I have worked with second language learners on public speaking skills for 8 years, mainly students aged 11-15. I've taught speech classes and run after-school groups in which I've worked with students on giving presentations in public. I help students build confidence through knowledge and practice, both of which make an excellent public speaker.

* 8 years of teaching reading to students with a variety of strengths, needs, and ability levels. I can support struggling students with phonics, fluency, vocabulary, phonemic awareness and comprehension/ retention. I can also support advanced students with compacted or accelerated curriculum.

Social Studies

I have spent 8 years teaching social studies in both elementary and middle school. I am extremely familiar with Common Core social studies standards grades K-12, as I have worked on curriculum development in this subject for many years. I am Highly Qualified to teach secondary social studies, as I have passed the PLACE test deeming me qualified for this subject.

Special Needs

I have worked with children and adults with special needs for over 15 years. I have an endorsement in special needs and can support students with developmental, physical, and intellectual disabilities. I have learned proven strategies for working with people with special needs, and I am very familiar with IEPs, the identification process, and how to modify assignments and provide accommodations as needed.

Study Skills

I've spent the past 8 years teaching students how to manage time including both their in class assignments and their homework load. I work one-on-one with students of all ability levels to ensure they are prepared, organized, and ready to learn. I aid students on IEPs, 504s, and ALPs with organization, keeping backpacks clean/organized, and keep planners or organizers up to date so students know what they need to do at home and when they have deadlines for various classes.
