About Corey

"There are no shortcuts to any place worth going". I love to help students reach their full potential by giving them useful tools that they can apply in and out of the classroom to be successful. I have 10+ years experience working in the area of special education from 4th-12th grade and have 9 years tutoring experience in both general and special education. I am able to make class curriculum/homework accessible and fun through various teaching approaches and techniques that work with students of all ability levels. My patience with students and experience as a teacher combine to make my sessions effective and fun.

My Undergraduate degree is in English and I was privileged to take courses within the University of Iowa's Writers Workshop. I have spent time working as a respite care provider for individuals on autism spectrum helping them access the community and develop life skills. My Master's Degree in Education with an emphasis in Special Education has provide me with the extra skills to be an effective teacher for students at all ability levels. I constantly search for new techniques and approaches to include into my teaching and have recently become a educational life coach.

I have a small dog at home that enjoys to meet new people and enjoy to spend time outdoors in Colorado. I enjoy watching football, college basketball, and attending Rockies Baseball games. I spend my free time camping and hiking in the mountains.

I have taught a special education English class for 11th and 12th grade students in the Parker Area. I am skilled reading and analyzing novels for literally elements and developing essays to summarize or argue a point within a text. My undergraduate degree in English with time working in the Iowa's Writer's Workshop have given me a unique set of skills that help students find their own 'voice' in their writing, which makes writing more enjoyable.

I have teaching experience working in a self contained autism classroom and also help students on the autism spectrum access general education curriculum at the middle and high school levels. I have worked closely with specialists and learned skills within my graduate program that allow me to meet the special needs of students with various disabilities.

I am excited to meet with you and learn what your educational goals are and develop a plan to help you reach them. There are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going, and I can be their to help you get the good work done.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a BA in English and have taught High School level English Special Education courses in Douglas County Schools. The tools that work for students who need extra support have proven to be effective for all students.

Special Needs

I have a Master's in Education with an Emphasis on Special Education. I have worked as a Case Manager and Special Education teacher at the High School level helping students with Aspergers access the general education curriculum and plan for their post-secondary-educational goals. I have also worked as a respite care provider helping students on the autism spectrum access their community and develop social skills. I am able to manage behaviors and have the patience to work with students that have a slow processing/response time. I also hold an active teaching license in CO as a K-12 special education teacher.

Writing

I have found that the first step to writing well in middle school is understanding the question that is being presented to you. Once you are able to do that creating a proficient response becomes much easier and confidence in writing will increase.
