About Carolyn

The best job I ever had was working for my university as a peer writing consultant. Becoming a consultant was not as straightforward as simply handing over a resume and acing an interview. First, before I could even apply, I had to be nominated by a professor to take an exclusive class because my writing repeatedly stood out. In that class, I had to learn about and research the theory and process of writing. I then had to learn how to use that research and those theories to help others improve their writing, and only then was I allowed to practice on my fellow classmates. Finally, after my professor and possibly new boss had seen my ability, I had to hope she would hire me! She did because I proved myself over and over again. Let me prove myself to you!

I offer a variety of tutoring services, from one-time consultations on a particular paper to individual or group lessons which will prepare your student to write in college. I must emphasize that I DO NOT EDIT STUDENT PAPERS. This practice is unethical in my opinion, and I suspect you would find it to be unethical in the opinion of your student's teachers as well. I teach students the skills and strategies to edit their own work so that they will be able to improve not only one paper, but all that follow.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have a B.A. in English from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. I spent a year as an English aide at a prestigious charter school in Colorado Springs, during which time I honed many of my own skills and substitute taught when the teachers were absent. I have also taught standardized test prep at the same charter school and have many tips and tricks up my sleeve that made me a very good test taker myself.

ACT Reading

I have a B.A. in English from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. I have studied reading comprehension and analysis in depth. I taught at a charter school for four years, and as standardized test prep was part of our curriculum, I have experience teaching standardized test reading skills.

Bible Studies

With a B.A. in English and a deep love for good stories, I have read many books in my lifetime. The best book I have ever read, however, is, undoubtedly, the Bible. I attended a Christian school for seven years and church and Bible studies for my whole life, and as a teenager I spent most of my free time either attending Bible studies or volunteering at my church. I have led and taught Bible studies in the past. It is my absolute favorite book to study and to teach.

Elementary Math

Though my degree is in English, I have both taught and tutored elementary mathematics in private and school settings. I have taught everything from first grade to pre-algebra. Of all subjects, math has the most potential to be fun, and yet for most students it is such a drag. My goal as a tutor is to make the seemingly abstract concepts of math more concrete by using a variety of hands on and creative techniques.

English

I obtained my B.A. in English from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. After a couple of years working in first grade, I brushed off my skills and spent a year as an English aide at a prestigious charter school.

Literature

My B.A. in English from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs focused primarily on literature. I am familiar with English literature from every genre and period, and I am also familiar with the different methods of literary critique and analysis. Literary analysis is like a treasure hunt, and I love giving students a map and showing them just how much fun it can be!

Public Speaking

I will never forget the first speech I ever gave. It was a nightmare; I was a shy, introverted, attention-hating, unpopular freshman in high school who never so much as raised a hand in class. By the time I graduated from college with a minor in Communication, you never would have known it. My experience with theater had given me a confidence and a new understanding of public speaking that made me fall in love with it, and as the hush fell over my awed audience in my American Literature class, I knew I was onto something, something big.

Reading

My B.A. in English from the University of Colorado at Colorado springs focused primarily on literature. As a result, I spent much of my time honing my reading comprehension and analysis skills, and I am able to tutor higher skill levels. I also taught reading to first, fifth, sixth, and some seventh and eighth grade students, which gave me experience teaching elementary reading as well.

SAT Reading

I have a B.A. in English from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. I have studied reading comprehension and analysis in depth. I taught at a charter school for four years, and as standardized test prep was part of our curriculum, I have experience teaching standardized test reading skills.

SAT Writing

My B.A. is in English from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, and while I was a student there I worked at the Writing Center as a peer writing consultant, so I am very familiar with college-level academic writing. I was an English aide at a local charter school for a year, which exposed me to the format and expectations of standardized testing. I also worked as an aide in the first, fifth, and sixth grades at the same charter school and gained experience with standardized writing expectations in elementary school as well.

Spelling

I love spelling. In the four years I spent working at a local charter school, I picked up some tips and tricks that help students study and learn spelling more effectively.

Writing

I have a B.A. in English from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. While a senior there, I tutored my peers as a writing consultant at the University's Writing Center. I worked with all kinds of students from PhD candidates to ELL students, gifted students, and students with special needs. After I graduated I worked for four years at a local charter school, during which time I gained experience teaching writing to first, fifth, sixth, and some seventh and eighth graders. My experience has given me the skills to tutor students of any ability level.
