Bio

Hello there! My name is Meghan and I’m a Precolonial Historian specializing in West African history. I studied History, Political Science, and Philosophy in undergrad at CU Boulder. There I won an undergraduate research grant, traveled to Senegal, and completed an original honors thesis that won summa cum laude. I learned to critically analyze conventional history and want to teach you or your children to thoroughly explore subjects until you own the information.

Traditional teaching methods are only a few hundred years in the making and they’ve proven to fail learners of every age. What helps people learn? Not being given the answer, not rote memorization, not equations, or how to guides. What helps students of all ages learn is being inspired to think, to care about what they are learning. Encouraging independent thought, questions, and analysis consistently helps the learner make the material their own.

I’m not here to improve you or your children’s grades or test scores, although I will. I’m here to share the love of true learning and inspire students to be their best. When you can teach me what I just taught you, I know a student has truly learned.

I have tutored children and adults off and on since I was in high school. I tutored adults and teens in college. I was my mother’s teachers assistant, grading and assisting her in tutoring her k-12 students in high school. I assisted my Aunt as a college professor as well. I was also a research and writing assistant for a graduate student, helping her take notes, organize them, and write grants. I’ve grown up in Academia and while I’ve had to take several years off after graduation due to Disabling health issues I couldn’t be happier to return to teaching.

Public Speaking

I have been acting since I was 3 years old and quickly became accustomed to public speaking. I studied and performed in theatre again throughout high school. As well as speech and debate 9-12, I competed specifically in Lincoln Douglas Debate which required speech writing, speech delivery, public speaking, cross examination, and debate with little preparation. I have also taught numerous fellow debaters and actors, know a variety of relaxation techniques, and have since tutored public speaking in college.

Proofreading,

Proofreading

I began proofreading and editing when I was in high school for my mother's K-12, primarily ESL, students. She noticed such marked improvement from my edits and comments alone she quickly had me begin one on one tutoring sessions with them. From there, I have assisted research and graduate students in grant writing, research, thesis and dissertation writing, as well as job and college applications. I am an excellent proofreader and attained summa cum laude on my own thesis.

Elementary Education

Reading,

Reading

Reading is fundamental to every subject. But if not taught right, with patience, skill, and imagination to excite children, they will never learn to their best ability. I love to teach children, "pre"teens, and teenagers reading, reading comprehension, vocabulary and more. I would love to help your children reach their best abilities.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

As the daughter of a K-12 teacher, and her teaching assistant since middle school I have had my own private tutor in both school and teaching for years. She has taught me how to study and how to teach study skills. She has helped me understand the styles of learning and how they relate to study skills. I seek to learn each student's learning style, individual needs, passions, and pre-established habits. We will likely always change habits to make them healthier, help students are more effective but finding methods and organization which feel intuitive to students leads to retention and builds lifelong learners.
Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is a lot of fun and student's can get a lot of use out of a thesaurus. However, I often see people inserting ostentatious words where a simpler, more basic word would more accurate and clearer. Building vocabulary is best when it occurs naturally, through reading and writing rather than rote memorization or a thesaurus to avoid this issue. When students learn through utilizing the vocabulary as they learn it they get a better idea of when to use more complex words, and when a simpler word would communicate their idea clearer. They also get an idea for how more complex words are actually utilized without breaking up the flow and style of a text.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

ACT English is a difficult item to prepare for. I achieved a high score without preparation due to my experience in writing and French grammar, which helped me understand English grammar. However, most kids need intensive help (just as I received my whole life from my mother) due to the complicated nature of being tested on and truly understanding a subject. I know how to make English interactive and fun and how to score well on the ACT test. I want to help your students with the same.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

Reading has been taught to most students for years. However, reading in concentration with analysis and content understanding has not been. Also, many students struggle with knowing which of all the answers is the best. Due to my own experience with the ACT and reading I know how to teach students test and reading skills to help them comprehend content faster and do better on tests.
English,

English

Entering college I was looking into a prospective major in English, until of course I realized I would gain just as much argumentative/expository writing skills in History as it is quite rigorous in my field. I also took many creative writing classes and stood out. I have always stood out in writing and thus know how to perform exceptionally. However, I am also fantastic at teaching writing and language to kids from first grade into college. I can often aide students and teachers higher than me. I tutored my mother's kids in her 5th - 12th grade classes on how to improve their expository writing skills, their use of language, as well as how to write with more ease and enjoyment. Due to how many writing classes I have taken and students I have taught I am exceptional, and my own mother who is a fantastic K-12 teacher is blown away by the extent of my ability to teach this specific skill. I also am fully aware of how important analysis of literature and arguments are in terms of general language arts and reading and have always entwined this in my writing lessons.
Literature,

Literature

I took honors English courses all through my education moving on to AP Lit and AP Lang as a junior and senior in high school. I then continued taking English and historical literature classes. I have a wide understanding of literature from various world regions, how to analyze texts from a variety of angles. I have also taken numerous creative writing classes and have been teaching writing since I was in middle school (please see writing subject qualifications for more about my experience).

SAT Reading

SAT reading and writing is not just about the test. The reason they have the SAT is to test a students ability to perform in college. Thus I focus on building the raw skills that students will need for the rest of their lives. I do this through some focus on the test goals and aims of course, as well test taking skills and tips for all (especially the nervous test taker). However, as a tutor of reading and writing for four years and as a TA for my mother who worked on grading and helping her students as well the ability to do well on an SAT test is not only knowing how to take the test but having mastery of the subject. I have the experience, skill, and knowledge to offer your children success in this area!

In college, my own skills improved as I won a research grant, applied to transfer colleges, applied for honors programs and scholarships, and wrote my original historical thesis that won summa cum laude. As my skills increased I continued tutoring highschool, college, and adult students assisting with general essays, scholarship and college applications, AP and standardized test prep, grant writing, and thesis/dissertation writing. I have numerous techniques to help student's of various learning styles to relax, unfreeze from writer's block, and express themselves clearly. I am skilled and passionate about helping student's find their voice, express their own ideas, and communicate with concise clarity. I would love to help your student do the same.

History

American History,

American History

As a major in history I have an intense passion for the subject and know how to teach it with flare and depth. I will help your student(s) develop a love of the material due to truly teaching the subject rather than just feeding rote memorization into their minds. History is a living breathing field and I would love to introduce this to your students.
European History,

European History

As a Historian of Africa I am uniquely positioned to inform your student's understanding of European history. Europe has long been shaped by its interaction with external regions, and then by its colonizing of those regions. I understand European history as the story of a continent that was influence by many regions, colonized by one, and then spread that colonization abroad. I teach history as a long story, filled with many stories told from various perspectives. I help students understand the particular context and question why people thought the way the did, how that shaped history, and why that is still significant to us today. I have also taken AP European history and received a 5 on the exam, after which I tutored numerous students in the course and test prep.
Geography,

Geography

As a historian I have to work with and understand a wide variety of subjects - ecology, geology, geography, sociology, psychology, etc. I have taken and helped students in multiple geography courses and understand how the subject is approached and how to help student’s learn it.
Government & Politics,

Government & Politics

As a Political Scientist I am qualified to help students through beginning to advanced levels of law, government, politics, and social sciences. I started studying Political Science earnestly in high school with AP US Gov, AP Comp Gov, Laws, Rights, and the Constitution. I then majored in Political Science, History, and Philosophy in which the study of government and politics was a primary focus.
Philosophy,

Philosophy

As a philosophy minor, Historian, and Political Scientist I have taken and taught a wealth of subjects within philosophy. From symbolic logic and metaphysics to Environmental and Moral Ethics; from Hellenistic to African and Afro Diasporan philosophy. I have studied philosophy throughout time and various regions; thus, I understand HOW to study philosophy regardless of the specific subject. Because of this, I am uniquely qualified to help you with any philosophical subject regardless of if I have personal experience with it. I have also specifically used Symbolic Logic in preparing myself and others for the LSAT!
Political Science,

Political Science

I have a BA in History and Political Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder. I have taken numerous courses on comparative democracy, democratization, comparative politics, political philosophy, ethics, international law, international relations, constitutional law, the American political system, African politics, and other various related topics. I have tutored this subject extensively with fellow classmates, students, adults, and even helped professors explain difficult concepts in classes. My methods are to teach the basic facts and then encourage conversation concerning political philosophy, ideology, systems, laws, as well as foster proper writing skills. I have also taken and taught AP US Gov and AP Comp Gov; I received a 5 on both exams and have prepared a number of students for the exams.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

The subjects that make up K-12 social studies have been my primary focus throughout college. As a Political Scientist and Historian - history, government, law, psychology, sociology, anthropology, archaeology, and geography were constant throughout my education. I also tutored students in these subjects in high school and throughout college, even creating lesson plans and assisting in research projects. I know social studies inside and out as I have made it my expertise.
Sociology,

Sociology

Studying history means I must be beyond proficient in numerous subjects. Anthropology, archaeology, ecology, geography, languages, and more. As a result of histories demands, sociology is one of the subjects I utilize most often in my historical analysis. I have studied class and gender sociology extensively due to my work in gender and class history. I would love to help you understand sociology from not only the perspective of the subject; but also the subject throughout time and various regions.
World History

World History

There is nothing more important to me than teaching people history in its full, fleshed out form. World history is history, studying regions is great for specificity but there is nothing to better help students comprehend the modern world and how it’s come to be than studying the interplay of all the world’s regions. As a specialist in Precolonial societies particularly in West Africa and African history generally I am especially qualified to help your student dig into these often woefully neglected regions. African history sheds a unique light on world and regional histories because it has been so neglected. I also studied world history in multiple classes then pursued various regions such as European, American, Latin American, Asian, and Middle Eastern history prior to specializing in African studies. I continue to study precolonial societies in these diverse regions as well. I have also taken AP World myself and received a 5 on the exam. Since then, I have helped students through the course and preparation for the AP Exam.

From middle and high school experience I know how a poor math teacher and/or curriculum can erode student's confidence, comfortability, and understanding. Although I was strong in math throughout my education, poor teachers frequently left me struggling, frustrated, and demoralized. I lost confidence whenever I worked with a poor teacher and thus I struggled far more than when I was sure of myself and my abilities. Few people teach math for true understanding, instead they have students simply accept and rote memorize algorithms. I understand math, but more than that I make sure my student's understand their math. I work to help them and encourage questions, critical thought. I want to nourish their mathematical minds until they are confident in themselves and their ability to figure out math problems.

Test Preparation

SAT Reading,

She was very helpful

She helped me understand the subject better and she was very patient. She explains everything with great detail and in a way that was easy for me to understand.

she is patient and the she communicates very well makes the problems eazy to understand

she taught me how to be more confident in my speeches and how to do my works cited page for my informative speech about the occupation of wounded Knee on the pine ridge reservation in 1973

Enthusiastic and patient!

Meghan is a wonderful tutor! I have worked with a couple of other tutors but Meghan has been the best! She is very patient and works through problems with you to ensure that you are understanding the information. As someone who is more of a visual learner and needs to understand the "why" to everything, Meghan, is great because she determines what kind of learner you are and teaches you based off of that. I 100% recommend her!
