University of Iowa
I currently work in higher education at the University of Colorado Denver, and previously worked at the University of Notre Dame as a Web Content Editor. Prior to Notre Dame, I worked for newspapers for about 14 years as a reporter, editor, and managing editor.
When I lived in Iowa City, I worked on a contract basis with Pearson, where I graded ACT essays, so I am familiar with the rubric needed to garner high marks.
I am a graduate of the University of Iowa, with a degree in journalism and mass communications. In elementary school, junior high, and high school, I was in all honors classes. In high school, I took AP (advanced placement) classes in U.S. History and Calculus, worked as a writing center tutor, and also played football and baseball.
My mother was a teacher (she's now retired), and it's a profession that I considered but did not pursue. I think I have a knack for teaching and tutoring.
I am married with a 4-year-old daughter and also two stepsons, who are 15 and 10.
I do work most weeknights, so my availability is generally on the weekends. Mike was great explaining to me how things work. He brought me a "cheat sheet" with the basics I needed to know. He was clear on his answers to my questions. Have another session scheduled. Look forward to reaching my goals with his help.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was in honors English/Reading classes from first grade through 12th grade. I have a bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communications. In my professional career, I've worked as a writer and editor, so I utilize reading, writing, and grammar skills every day.
I have taken several of the ACT English practice tests, including ones that come from ACT. I can answer all of the questions correctly, explain the type of things the ACT will test you on and even try to trick you on, and have cheat sheets that help with all of the areas of the test, which are:
Grammar and usage
I took all honors math classes from first grade through 12th grade. As a senior in high school, I took AP Calculus and passed the test at the end of the year, which earned me college credits.
I have taken several of the ACT practice tests in math, including the ones from ACT, and can explain the answers to all of the questions.
I have passed all of WyzAnt's ACT subject tests, and I once worked a part-time job in Iowa City (where ACT is based) as an "expert scorer" for the ACT written essays.
The reading test is based on selections from social studies, natural sciences, literary narrative, and the humanities.
The test questions ask you to derive meaning from texts by referring to what is stated and reasoning to determine implicit meanings. You'll have to use reasoning and logic skills to determine main ideas, interpret significant details, comprehend cause-effect relationships, and more.
