University of Arizona (Master's)
Hello! My name is Raleigh S. I am originally from Houston, TX and I have also lived in Tucson, AZ before settling in Denver, CO. I majored in Spanish and Portuguese and minored in French at the University of Arizona in Tucson where I graduated magna cum laude with honors with a Bachelor of Arts. I also attended graduate school at the same institution and earned my Master's degree in Hispanic Linguistics. I worked at the university as a tutor in Spanish and Linguistics for two semesters and as a Spanish instructor for seven semesters. I have also taught advanced Spanish classes at the high school level, and I have worked as a freelance translator. I love teaching and learning foreign languages and I would love to help you learn them as well. My specialty is Spanish (all levels), but I also tutor in French (all levels), Portuguese (all levels) and in English as a second language. I can also assist in improving knowledge in Geography. As a linguist, I have a very good understanding of how people learn a language and the problems that students have in the process. My past studies of phonetics and phonology also allow me to greatly help students improve their pronunciation. I know that learning a language can be hard (especially for adults), but I believe that anyone can do it with enough dedication and with a knowledgeable teacher to guide them. Generally, in both my classroom and private lessons I like to employ a well-rounded approach, emphasizing all the important aspects of speaking, listening, reading and writing and including a variety of materials such as short readings, videos, and music in addition to the more ordinary grammar and vocabulary lessons. I believe this method provides the best overall command of the language. I am also good at tailoring a customized curriculum for those who have specific interests. Contact me for more information; I would love to get to know you and help you be successful!

Raleigh is tutoring our 13-year-old son, who just returned from a six-month language immersion in Spain. Raleigh is really nice, professional, and smart, and he quickly determined a good plan for our son. Thank you, Raleigh!
My son, a high school junior in his junior year, really appreciated how how well Raleigh explained concepts and how he worked with Danny to get to the root of the areas where Danny is struggling and his misunderstandings.
Raleigh is an excellent tutor. He is very patient, no matter how many times my pronunciation needs correcting! He covers several topics each session, e.g. new vocabulary, verbs, sentence structure, which keeps the sessions moving and stimulating. I appreciate the effort he puts in to preparing for my lesson, in order to make it as productive and interesting as possible.
Raleigh was prompt and professional. He answered all of my questions and had a thorough knowledge of the material. I plan on using him again before my next major exam.
Raleigh was incredibly patient with me while I was learning Spanish. Not only does he really know his material but the hints and tricks he has to help you remember various things are invaluable. I would recommend Raleigh to anyone trying to learn a language who wants a down-to-earth, wickedly smart and personable tutor!
Raleigh is doing a wonderful job teaching me Spanish. He's so patient as I wonder off the subject taking the time to answers my questions before returning! Very positive and helpful!
A really great tutor!
I was looking for assistance on french pronunciation. Raleigh had good materials to assist me and was flexible in tailoring our session to my needs. I would recommend him.
Raleigh was really good. My daughter has had 3 french teachers over 5 years and never understood the 2 types of verbs. Raleigh explained it in about 20 seconds.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
