About Shawn

As an educator, I am a people builder. When a child grasps knowledge and understanding, the beauty of teaching is personified! The keys to learning and academic success are many. The most meaningful is motivation. Children learn when they are interested. I believe children learn best by "doing." Learning is active! A child retains information best when the learning activity allows the student to experience the "how to" process of learning by "doing." Learning is visual first, allowing the student to process what he/she observes. Learning is then auditory as the spoken words connect with the visual. The combination is then translated into a meaningful verbal expression that allows a student to reveal what is known or unknown (comprehension). I am then able to meet the student at his/her level of growth and academic development need. I believe the tiered learning approach encompasses visual-auditory-written and diverse modalities (standing, sitting, outside, quiet, technology and music to name a few) to ensure that learning and retaining what is learned is taking place. Since we are all life-long learners, teaching is active! The application of learning how different children think in turn, improves my teaching skills to better meet student needs.

I have a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies and a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, and over ten years of experience working children in an educational setting. I have completed the Project Wild certificate programs through Texas Parks and Wildlife educational training for math and reading in elementary learning environments.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a licensed educator Early Childhood - 6th grade/English Second Language.
I am experienced in all Elementary content areas.
I currently teach 4th grade and English Language Development (ELD) in Aurora Public Schools.

Elementary Math

I have a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies - Content integration across curriculum.
I have a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction - Test Design and Assessments
Additionally, I find that most students are visual thinkers and hands-on learners. Therefore, any opportunity to use visuals/hands-on materials, will support the thinking and learning process, as the student makes meaningful and personalized connections for understanding and problem solving.
