Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a mathematics and special education teacher. A majority of my students are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. I have found that a one-on-one environment can be beneficial for students with this disability as it allows them to be focused and they gain confidence.

Aspergers

I am a special education teacher. I have several students with Aspergers or similar disorders. I feel that with a student with Aspergers you need to learn their personality, likes/dislikes, and needs before knowing how to work with the child. You need to adapt how you teach to meet those needs.

Autism

Not only am I a special education teacher with many autistic students, but I also have a cousin who is autistic. I find autistic students a pleasure to work with. They are each so different and have great personalities once you get to know them.

Elementary (K-6th)

I grew up tutoring my relatives. I have multiple family members who work in elementary education and often help in their classrooms. I also feel that with working with secondary students I learn of things that elementary students miss along the way.

Special Needs

I have a teaching license in special education and have taught special education for the last 2 years.

Study Skills

I tutored in study skills while working at Sylvan Learning Center. I am also a special education teacher, so I work on this on a daily basis with my students. I teach students how to find an organizational style that works for them, show them how to take notes in a way useful to studying, and show them ways to use their notes and resources to study.
