About Allen

I am a certified secondary teacher in Michigan and Arizona (Colorado in progress). I have over ten years of teaching experience ranging from 7th grade through the community college level. My undergraduate education includes a major in biology and minors in chemistry 7 general science. In 2013 I finished my masters degree (M.S.) in biology.

I excel at making students feel comfortable during tutoring sessions, this helps with brain function and leads to increased success. Being able to model critical thinking using different learning modalities makes logic easier to apply.

I have seven years experience teaching high school biology, environmental science, and forensics. At the community college level I taught biology for nurses and environmental science.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

Being able to think through anatomy questions helps make sense of all that memorization!

Biology

I am nearly finished with my Master's degree in Biology. I am very familiar with high school biology content, and am currently a high school biology teacher. Relevant Master's courses include: infectious disease, immunology, human physiology, environmental science, bio-statistics and philosophy of biology.

Ecology

I have both undergraduate and graduate level ecology/environmental science course experience. More important for tutoring is that I taught these subjects to three different student groups: middle school, high school, and community college. With many resources available we can improve your scores!

Geology

I taught geology and earth science to both middle and high school students. Is this you? Do you need some friendly assistance in helping you think through the content?

Microbiology

As an undergraduate biology student I took the advanced 5 credit 300 level microbiology with lab. I also was one of the founding members of the Eastern Michigan University Microbiology club. I am a member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM).

During my graduate degree training in Biology I have taken the following courses which comprise microbiology: Infectious diseases, Immunology and a directed readings study on MDSC (a specific type of immune cell).

Physiology

I have coursework that spans from undergraduate through graduate level, including: cancer biology, immunology, network biology, and human physiology.

Psychology

Being a certified teacher I have taken many additional psychology courses above psychology 1 and 2. Having taught units about behavioral economics, I understand game theory, fairness, and justice. Finally, I have helped AP psychology & college students design and implement studies.

Statistics

Able to take the math and explain what it means in easy to understand terms. Stats is more about understanding how to think scientifically than it is about being a calculator. :) I performed data analysis for my administration while teaching.

Swimming

I swam Club from age 8-17. I won numerous championships, was top 3 in state performances, and was awarded two outstanding performer of the meet awards. In high school, I captained the team, placed 3rd in state (MI) in 100Breast and 10th in 200IM (1999). In college, I was a member of Eastern Michigan University Men's Varsity swim team 1999-2001. At EMU, I took theory of swim coaching with EMU and Club Wolverine coach Peter Linn. For the past seven years, I have been Valley Vista High School Varsity swim coach. During the last two years, my coaching produced the North West Region Male Swimmer of the meet. Additionally, I taught swim lessons, Red Cross levels 3-8, for seven years at the Lincoln Park Community Center; I also taught adult swim lessons. I am first AID and CPR certified.

Extraordinarily knowledgeable and helpful — Allen helped me complete a statistics project and made sure that I understood each step of the process. He was able to explain statistics in plain English instead of math jargon. He also helped me correct my wording on my project when necessary. I would highly recommend him as a tutor for any subject, especially Biology or statistics. ...
