About Susan

I'm Susan and am an experienced teacher and on-going learner. I've taught second through ninth grade on three different continents, Germany, United States and Australia. Whenever I can get the opportunity to match up a student to the learning style and curriculum they need, I feel successful. Learning is fun and takes grit to accomplish new learning at times. Practice is a key to learning. Making mistakes is a part of learning also, so students are guided to engage and be open to it. Then try it again. Learning can be enjoyable and hard work at the same time. Everyone has times they need some help or guidance. This makes them wise to ask. When I get to know a student's interests this helps me connect with this fascinating young person and we develop a working relationship. Learning takes place at a higher level.

To get to know me better at the beginning of my career I taught mainly elementary education. Throughout the rest of my time teaching it has been mainly middle school ages and a bit of high school mixed in as a chance to teach another age group. I have taught talented and gifted to being a reading specialist. I have taught and am highly qualified to teach English, Social Studies, Geography and Talented and Gifted at the primary and secondary level. I am also qualified in teaching ESL. I have many ideas and ways to create an environment so students enjoy their learning and still get the skills learned.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

As a reading specialist I was trained in and taught using the Linda-Mood Bell methods and the Wilson methods. The students that were in my Wilson class were dyslexic. So I can give students various ways to use phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency and comprehension.

Elementary (K-6th)

My bachelor's degree was in elementary education. I taught in elementary for at least 15 years of my teaching career. I have taught talented and gifted in elementary education and in the middle school level. I have been a reading specialist.

I have a degree in elementary education and have been teaching middle school for The last nine years.

ESL/ESOL

Handwriting

I have taught handwriting. The D'Nelion style is one of the styles I have taught. I enjoy practicing with students using fake checks. It is a great purpose to use penmanship with this activity. I have taught for over 33 years.

Phonics

As far as phonics I am highly qualified. I did my master's thesis on Reading Recovery. I have been trained with the Linda-Mood Bell method and the Wilson Method. Both are phonic based programs. I have been a reading specialist.

Reading

I'm highly qualified as a reading specialist. I am qualified in Wilson training and have taught a variety of English classes. I have my Elementary Education Teacher's License. I enjoy children and teach skills with a variety of styles.

Social Studies

I am highly qualified in social studies by taking the PLACE test and passing it. I have taught social studies off and on throughout my teaching career. I have also taught on three different continents and feel I have a more worldly perspective.
