State University of West Georgia (MEd)
My passion for teaching began 22 years ago after graduating from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communications. Right before graduating, I was offered a teaching position at a small private school in Atlanta. Realizing that I loved seeing my students faces light up when they "got the concept" I was teaching, and feeling that I was truly called to teach and work with young people, I started working on my Teaching Certificate at Brenau University. Soon, I was teaching fourth and fifth graders at Woodward Academy. While teaching full time at Woodward, I received my Master of Education degree in Middle Grades English from the University of West Georgia. I have now been teaching for 22 years, and I am just as passionate about seeing my students grow socially, academically and spiritually as the first year I began. Over the years, I have found that building a good rapport with my students by having a relatable personality is one key to success. Not only do I find a way to make the concepts I am teaching come to life by giving real-world examples, but I patiently encourage my students through repetition and practice until he/she could teach the information or concept to someone else. Over the past 22 years, I have learned some of the most effective methods to teach English, writing, reading, and basic math, social studies and science. I focus on making the information I am teaching interesting, relevant and useful, so the student is able take ownership of the learning process as he/she sees how the concepts connect to his/her everyday life.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Although I do not consider myself a Bible scholar, I have studied the Bible extensively since I was in elementary school. I attended a private Christian school from first grade through twelfth grade, so I took Bible every year. Additionally, I went to seminary in Colorado Springs at Charis Bible College. I have been a Christian since I was five years old, so I am continually reading the Bible and learning more each day.
With 22 years of experience teaching and curriculum curriculum development, I have proven results in delivering instruction that engages both the mind and the heart of a child in the learning process. I am currently teaching 5th grade math, science, English, literature and Bible.
Although I do not teach the younger students, I have continued basic phonics training with older students who were struggling with reading and spelling. Additionally, I have successfully completed the basic Orton Gillingham training program in which I learned techniques that have proven effective in teaching students to read and write proficiently.
My undergraduate degree from Auburn University is a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communications with a minor in Theater Performance. As a seasoned teacher, I am constantly honing my public speaking skills and I am asked to speak at graduations, open houses, parent orientation meetings, etc. Additionally, I performed in several plays in college and in community theater after graduating.
One of the most daunting transitions for students at my particular school is from fourth grade to fifth grade. A major part of the curriculum in every subject is to sharpen our students' study skills, organizational skills, and test taking skills. Typically, an organized student who knows how to study, take good notes, ask good questions, and who has developed good test taking skills, will be successful. I have developed a tried and true system that has helped even my most disorganized learners.
