My name is Nicole and teaching is my passion!
I have been a career educator since 2001 and have taught middle school through college. I hold a Colorado teaching license with a dual endorsement in secondary math and general science and currently teach 7th and 8th grade math and science at a middle school in Golden as the school's lead middle school math and science teacher. Although I teach both math and science, math is my true passion; I can't imagine life without solving really cool equations with my students and challenging them to develop a confident, enlightening understanding of the problems they solve.
When I taught college prep math to military veterans at Metropolitan State University of Denver, I taught algebra and geometry using real-life scenarios so the students could understand direct applications of math. When I taught English composition at Metro, I would ask my students to use their personal experiences to draw parallels to characters in novels and create expressive, thoughtful essays detailing their responses to the novels we read in class. I believe if students can understand academic content on a practical and personal level, then they can develop the confidence in themselves to tackle whatever content they choose.
Every student learns and comprehends at his or her own pace, and I have developed a persistent patience with my students in order to help them avoid giving up on challenging material. Learning takes time, patience, and practice.

If a student has forgotten to notify me of a cancelled session before I arrive for our scheduled session, then I assess a $20 fee for time and travel.

Great Tutor! The results are amazing! My daughter is a freshman in high school and her math was always between a B and a C (more toward C). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. Helping high school students prepare for the ACT math section is one of my specialties. My personal ACT math score range is 34-36. I am an ACT math EXPERT. I have a number of ACT practice tests (including tests which were formally given to all high school students), and I use these tests to help my students not only learn and review the content, but also to feel more comfortable and confident with this exam. I review every incorrect answer and explain to my students why their answers are incorrect and how to determine the correct answers.
While helping students study for the ACT Reading section, I have them read and analyze each reading passage so I can develop a personalized strategy for every student. I ask reading comprehension questions as they read each passage in order to teach them active reading strategies specific to each passage (the four passages are Prose Fiction, Social Science, Humanities, and Natural Science). Then, I'll review each question type with them and show them how to find the answers in the passage. Of course, not every question requires a simple glance back at the passage, so I teach students how to use inferencing and elimination strategies to choose the correct answer. I frequently hear from students how easy it is to choose the correct answer after having been shown appropriate reading passage strategies.

Many students struggle with reading comprehension concepts like analyzing the author's purpose, finding a main idea or central theme, or making reasonable conclusions based on paragraph/story evidence. I find that 1:1 tutoring allows these struggling students to freely vent their frustrations and ask questions they may never ask in class, for fear of publicizing their self-doubt and confusion to their teacher and classmates. When students feel comfortable with their tutor, they develop a sense of trust; once the trust is formed, students finally begin to grow self-confident. This self-confidence is the catalyst for academic success: higher grades, positive self-esteem, and love for learning and exploring. A self-confident student is a successful, happy student!
I have tutored SAT math for almost 10 years. I know the SAT is being redesigned (launch date spring 2016), and I've started researching and practicing new strategies for the new test in order to best prepare my students. I'm excited for the changes and I think students will feel more confident with the content and structure of this exam.
As a native Marylander, I am quite familiar with the SAT exam. I began helping students prepare for this exam in 2001 and have, personally, scored a perfect 800 in both the math and writing portions of the exam (my highest critical reading score is a 750, which is a 98 percentile rank). Most students struggle with the vocabulary questions found in the critical reading sections of the exam, so helping students build a stronger vocabulary is an integral part of my SAT teaching strategy. I use practice tests and give homework in order to maximize student learning/understanding to ensure that my students earn higher SAT test scores.

Trig can be quite a task for a lot of students and I found the best way to tackle the content is to memorize identities and solve practice problems. Knowing how to start can make a seemingly complicated problem appear easy. :)
Teaching students the art of writing has been a passion of mine since I was in high school; my first job as a tutor was as a writing tutor when I was only 14 years old. I created a writing "club" to provide English and writing assistance to student athletes needing to maintain academic eligibility. In college, I continued tutoring student athletes and spent most of my time teaching writing and grammar to the football players. Since earning my B.S. in 1997, I've tutored hundreds of students in all academic content areas and have built my career doing what I love: teaching. :)
