About Nicole

My name is Nicole and teaching is my passion!
**I'm currently scheduling SAT and ACT sessions in preparation for the 2017-2018 fall, winter, and spring tests. If you're interested in setting up SAT or ACT sessions with me, contact me as soon as possible since my schedule fills pretty quickly.**

I have been a career educator since 2001 and have taught middle school through college. I hold a current Colorado teaching license with a dual endorsement in secondary math and general science and currently teach math and science in Jefferson County.

I'm passionate about teaching mathematics; I can't imagine life without solving really cool equations with my students and challenging them to develop a confident, enlightening understanding of the problems they solve. For example, when I taught college prep math to military veterans at Metropolitan State University of Denver, I taught algebra and geometry using real-life scenarios so the students could understand direct applications of math.

I've also taught English Language and Composition courses at Metro. My students used their personal experiences to draw parallels to characters in novels and create expressive, thoughtful essays detailing their responses to the novels we read in class. I believe if students can understand academic content on a practical and personal level then they can develop the confidence in themselves to tackle whatever content they choose.

Every student learns and comprehends at his or her own pace, and I have developed a persistent patience with my students in order to help them avoid giving up on challenging material. Learning takes time, patience, and practice.

My specialty subjects are PSAT, SAT, and ACT preparation and secondary mathematics; however, I tutor other subjects. Please feel free to email me your schedule availability, including any questions, and I'll respond as quickly as I can.

My travel area includes Broomfield, Superior, Louisville, Arvada, Candelas, Westminster, and sections of Lafayette.

Thank you for considering me as your family's personal tutor!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I love helping students prepare for the ACT, and the English section is one of my favorite sections to teach.

ACT Math

Helping high school students prepare for the ACT math section is one of my specialties. My personal ACT math score range is 34-36. I am an ACT math EXPERT. I have a number of ACT practice tests (most of which are previously administered tests), and I use these tests to help my students learn the content and monitor their progress.

ACT Reading

I hold a Colorado teaching license with a dual endorsement in secondary math and general science and currently teach middle school math and science in Jefferson County.

I develop a personalized reading strategy for each of my ACT students based on a combination of factors, including previous test scores, reading speed, comprehension level, and goal score. I ask my students questions as they read each passage in order to teach them active reading strategies specific to each of the four passages. Then, I'll review each question type with them and show them how to find the answers in the passage. Of course, not every question requires a simple glance back at the passage, so I teach students how to use inferencing and elimination strategies to choose the correct answer. I frequently hear from students how easy it is to choose the correct answer after having been shown the appropriate reading passage strategies.

ACT Science

During my ACT Science sessions, I model how to use the answer choices and the specific instructions given in the questions to correctly navigate experimental data. I also incorporate timed practice so students can feel comfortable with given time constraints.

Algebra 1

For over ten years, I've taught algebra to middle school and high school students, and I love helping my students become confident and successful mathematicians. I currently teach 7th and 8th grade Algebra 1 Honors courses.

Algebra 2

I've helped students learn Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra for over 10 years. I love teaching algebra and getting my students excited about math; I feel so proud when they smile and exclaim, "I didn't know algebra could be this easy!"

American History

I think I inherited my love of American History from my grandfather, Guy, who served in WWII and grew up during the Great Depression. He was passionate about learning everything about WWI, the American Civil War, and the American Revolutionary War (he was quite the war buff). I've developed a bit of a "history hobby" and relish every opportunity to learn more about this subject with my students. :)

Common Core

I am a licensed secondary educator for Jeffco Public Schools, which currently uses the Common Core teaching model. I use Common Core curriculum when teaching both my math and science classes and use the Common Core Big Ideas Math series for my Pre-Algebra and Algebra classes. I am very familiar with this model and use it every day.

English

I've taught English Composition at Metropolitan State University of Denver as an Adjunct Faculty member.

Geometry

I have been tutoring students in algebra and geometry for over ten years and currently teach a high school geometry course to middle school G/T students. I've found that a successful geometry student has solid algebra 1 skills, so if I tutor a student who struggles with geometry, I'll also help this student strengthen his or her algebra skills.

Grammar

I taught an English course at Metro for six semesters, and I have over 10 years of English/grammar tutoring experience.

Physical Science

I taught a general science class- a combination of physical science and life science- at Metropolitan State University of Denver. I have a B.S. Degree in Nutrition Science and have taught/tutored science for well over 10 years. I currently teach 7th and 8th grade physical science and life science.

Prealgebra

I have over ten years of experience tutoring pre-algebra and algebra to middle and high school students and college students. I currently teach 7th and 8th grade honor students pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry, and I've taught math at Metropolitan State University of Denver as an Adjunct Faculty member, preparing students to take the elementary and college level math Accuplacer exams.

Precalculus

Precalculus, otherwise known in some school districts as Math 4, can be very challenging for students. Personally, I find this course exciting and look forward to helping my students understand the content.

PSAT

I have 15 years of experience preparing students to take the PSAT/NMSQT. The PSAT has recently changed, and I have a number of practice PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 exams reflecting these changes (I also have practice questions for the PSAT 8/9). Each of the four sections- Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Parts 1 and 2- require both content knowledge and test strategy. When I review the Reading section with my students, we read passages together and analyze content specific to the passage. For example, the fiction piece requires extensive character analysis, which I teach to my students via active reading. We also complete timed practice together so I can develop a timing strategy specific to a student's needs. I'll also show students how to score their tests so they can complete additional practice on their own. I always assign homework after each two hour session so students can practice taking the exam. My PSAT sessions run for two hours because of the amount of content covered in each section. I assign practice tests every week and give additional practice as needed. PSAT review sessions are an excellent precursor to SAT review sessions since the SAT comprises the same content as the PSAT. Frankly, I consider myself a test preparation expert and specialize in teaching PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, and ACT strategies.

SAT Math

I've been helping students prepare for the SAT exam since 2001 and have personally scored an 800 on the math section. When I managed a tutoring business in Baltimore, I was the Center Director in charge of managing the SAT Test Preparation program, so I'm very familiar with the content and structure of the exam and know how students should prepare for the updated version of the test. The SAT has been redesigned, and I think students will feel more confident with the content and structure of this latest version of the exam.

Students will find the Writing and Language section of the test very similar to the English section of the ACT exam, and students will have 50 minutes to read a prompt and plan and write an essay.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry concepts can feel frustrating for many students, but I've found that the best way to tackle the content is to memorize identities and solve practice problems.

Tutor of the Year

My daughter (high honor roll student, tough critic) has tried out a number of SAT tutors on WyzAnt; Nicole by far leads the pack. She was on-time, organized, and went out of her way to be flexible in scheduling. She was patient, kind and supportive. Most importantly, she managed to adapt to my daughter's learning style very quickly. Nicole intuited her needs, simplified math and critical read
