About Joel

I've been teaching and tutoring since I myself was a high school student in the late 1980s. I've taught music and Spanish to toddlers, teens, adults, and even senior citizens. I've taught at after-school programs, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, music festivals, and at the undergraduate and graduate level at UCLA.

I have a PhD in Music Composition from UCLA. I've been a professional composer since the early '90s. I've scored soundtracks for the Discovery Channel and National Geographic, my musical, "Election Day," was produced at an off-Broadway theater in NYC, and I've composed numerous works for orchestra, concert band, and chamber groups.

For ten summers, I served as Head of Composition and Theory at the American Festival for the Arts, a high school summer conservatory in Houston.

I love learning, and the more I teach, the more I learn. I love imparting knowledge to those who seek it, and I enjoy coaching and encouraging students to discover their true potential.

As a composer, songwriter, producer, and performer, I have 26 years of professional experience in music. I've also been a music educator since the 1980s. Furthermore, I grew up in Peru and thus am fluent in Spanish.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have a PhD in Music Composition from UCLA. I've been a professional composer since the early '90s. I've scored soundtracks for the Discovery Channel and National Geographic, my musical, "Election Day," was produced at an off-Broadway theater in NYC, and I've composed numerous works for orchestra, concert band, and chamber groups. For ten summers, I served as Head of Composition and Theory at the American Festival for the Arts, a high school summer conservatory in Houston.

General Music

I have a PhD in Music Composition from UCLA, where, for 5 years, I also taught music theory, musicianship, and music technology.

I've also been a professional singer-songwriter since the mid-'90s, having recorded 5 albums or original music and toured internationally.

Music Production

I taught Music Technology to doctoral students at UCLA. This course included in-depth instruction in music production, studio recording, Pro Tools, and Logic. I've produced orchestral soundtracks for the Discovery Channel. I've also produced numerous albums of original singer-songwriter material, indie rock, and folk music.

Songwriting

I've also been a professional singer-songwriter since the mid-'90s, having recorded 5 albums or original music and toured internationally. My musical, "Election Day," was produced off-Broadway in NY. I was hired by the Colburn School of Music in downtown LA to teach songwriting, and for 10 summers I taught a songwriting workshop at the American Festival for the Arts in Houston, TX.

Spanish

I've been tutoring Spanish students since I myself was a high school student in the late '80s. I grew up in Peru and my mother is Peruvian, so my Spanish is practically as good as a native speaker's. My formal education is actually in Music, and I have a PhD from UCLA. In addition to tutoring Spanish, I've also been teaching music to students of all ages for over 25 years. I'm very comfortable working with elementary, middle, and high school students. I'm easy-going and patient while I also encourage and motivate my students to achieve their highest potential in the classroom.

I believe that, for an American - especially a Californian - it would be a detriment to NOT know how to speak, read, and write in Spanish, as our country and our state are increasingly becoming more and more bilingual. Furthermore, most of the countries in the Americas are Spanish-based, so it would be highly advantageous for young people in the USA to learn the language now so that they can later succeed socially and economically.
